Stockwell, South-West London: Zainab Ayinla

CONVICTED (2024) | Zainab Ayinla, born 14 May 1986, of Loughborough Park, Stockwell, London SW9 8TP – starved a bulldog to death.

RSPCA prosecution of Zainab Ayinla from Stockwell, London, who starved a dog to death.

The emaciated body of the dog, known as Patch, was admitted to a veterinary hospital on December 17, 2022. He had lost an alarming 13kg since his last visit to the vet hospital, just seven months prior and his condition was described by a vet as “shocking”.

The court heard that Ayinla had contacted the vet hospital two months earlier mentioning Patch’s concerning weight loss, but failed to attend a subsequent appointment.

On December 17, Ayinla called the vet again, reporting that her pet could no longer walk and was showing signs of distress with laboured breathing and sporadic twitching.

By the time Ayinla managed to get Patch to the vet, he had already died.

Post-mortem examination revealed that Patch had 92g of plastic material in his stomach, pointing to extreme hunger.

It was concluded the direct cause of death was severe malnutrition. There was no underlying cause; he was able to eat but had no access to food.

The vet said: “His condition at presentation was shocking: he was significantly underweight with an accountable weight loss of 13kg in the past seven months since the last time he was seen at the hospital in May 2022, with very long nails and bed sores and urine scalding.

“Considering Patch’s presentation on the 17 December and the missed appointment in November, is it my professional opinion that Patch went through a significant period of suffering until the time of his death.

“Would the owner have him brought to us sooner and probably we would have been able to help him, whether from a medical point of view or supporting the owner in providing care for her pet.”

Ayinla’s defence was that she “had done everything she could for the dog”, having sought advice about worming and Patch’s weight loss, yet there was no corresponding record of this in Patch’s vet hospital documentation.

RSPCA inspector Philip Norman, who investigated for the animal welfare charity, said: “Animals are completely reliant on their owners to ensure their needs are met. Providing food and water is an essential.

“Owning an animal is a privilege – and ensuring appropriate care is a key part of the responsibility we have towards them.

“It’s sad that, in this instance, the owner of Patch failed to provide him with a suitable diet and as a result allowed him to suffer for a prolonged period of time.”

Sentencing | fined £300 and ordered to pay £800 in court costs. 10-year ban on keeping dogs.

Vauxhall, South-West London: Danielle McQuade

CONVICTED (2023) | Danielle Toni McQuade, aka Ellie McQuade, born 13 August 1983, of Hannah Barlow House, 4 Portland Grove, Vauxhall, London Borough of Lambeth SW8 1JW – for starving to death a bull-breed dog.

McQuade took the deceased dog, named Nellie, to Blue Cross Victoria animal hospital.

Finding Nellie to be extremely thin and covered in sores, Blue Cross staff alerted the RSPCA who launched an investigation.

RSPCA inspector Nicole Broster examined Nellie. She said: “Her ribs, hips and spine were very visible and prominent to the touch. I was especially distressed by the visibility of her skull bones.

“When I lifted her body I could not feel much fat padding and she was very light for a dog of that breed. I also noticed that she had pressure sores on her joints.

“There was waste at her back end and I noticed she was wrapped in blankets and had a large newish black collar on her neck. It looked far too big for her and was very loose and had a tag with the name ‘Nellie’ and a phone number on.”

Nellie weighed just 12kg (26.5b), 6kg (13.25lb) lighter than when she was weighed as a puppy two years before.

McQuade had previously sought veterinary advice in June 2021, claiming the dog was always hungry but not gaining weight. She then wormed the dog but failed to seek further veterinary advice or treatment when that didn’t resolve the problem.

A post mortem found no evidence of illness, suggesting the poor dog starved to death.

The vet said: “No underlying illness or abnormalities were found therefore gross underfeeding or lack of feeding is most likely.”

The vet added: “In my professional opinion, no matter the cause her owner has failed to seek appropriate veterinary treatment and thus has caused unnecessary suffering, which is contrary to the code of practice for the welfare of dogs. Breaches are likely to have occurred since at least June 2021 as that is when the owner first reported noticing signs of illness, and potentially earlier.”

In mitigation, McQuade said that she had previously owned animals and was well-intentioned. She is also the sole carer of a child. She failed to attend her trial and was found guilty in her absence.

Sentencing | 12-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work and 15 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days; £400 costs. 10-year ban on owning animals.

Vauxhall, South London: Alexander Warren

CONVICTED (2022) | Alexander Giovanni Warren aka AJ Carter, born 17 September 1987, of Daryngton House, Hartington Road, Vauxhall, London SW8 2HR – hit a police horse during a demonstration.

Violent thug Alexander Warren, a former heavyweight boxer, was jailed for striking a police horse.

Former professional boxer Alexander Warren was part of an anti-Covid vaccination rally outside Newcastle upon Tyne civic centre in August 2021 when he struck a police horse called Patronus on the backside. It was alleged that he threatened to knock the horse out. He was also accused of slapping another horse named Penelope on the face after telling her rider to “get that fucking horse out of my face”.

Giving evidence, Sgt Coates, who was riding Patronus, told the court he was at the top of Northumberland Street with three other mounted officers when the protest turned “particularly threatening” and they made their way over to the green in front of the Civic Centre, opposite Percy Street. He described Warren having a megaphone and goading the crowd to follow him to try and break the police line.

Sgt Coates continued: “The defendant was trying to get past me and Patronus. When he walked past he threatened to knock Patronus out. He then assaulted the horse. He hit Patronus’s back end, to the left hand side, with his flat hand.”

Sgt Coates said Patronus reacted by being startled and anxious and he had to concentrate on keeping her stationary. When asked what he thought Warren’s intention was by hitting the horse, the officer said: “I think he intended for the horse to bolt with me on it.”

Also giving evidence was PC Adair, the rider of Penelope, who Warren allegedly targeted next.

She told the court that she first noticed Warren when he was inciting the crowd to break the line of police officers, who were stood behind her.

PC Adair added: “I bent down and said to the defendant that he couldn’t go that way. The horse turned her head at the same time and the defendant got more agitated and shoved the horses face and said “Get your fucking horse away from me.

“He didn’t stop, he carried on walking. At that point, [another officer] on a horse called Pluto got hold of the defendant’s rucksack to try and get him detained.”

The court heard that a crowd then encircled Pluto and Warren managed to wriggle free and flee. He was, however, later arrested.

Asked how Penelope reacted when allegedly struck by Warren, PC Adair said: “She was startled and taken aback. When you raise your hand quickly at a horse, it doesn’t matter how much training you give them, they will always get a fright.”

Giving evidence, Warren said the police horse was being made to walk in front of him to block his path.

He said that police horse Patronus had “pecked” his head several times and said he was “shocked” by what he described as an “attack” on him, but denied that he had lost control of his emotions and temper before the incident.

He said: “It was quite a shocking incident because the horse was pecking my head. I was being attacked and felt aggrieved and wanted to get out of the situation. Every time I tried to get out of the situation he [the officer] was making the horse step one side in front of me.

“I stepped to my right and pushed the horse’s hip and bum area to get the horse and officer away from me to get past the horse.”

Warren said that on a scale of one to 10 he used a level four of force in doing so.

The defendant said he had travelled to protest with intention of “raising awareness” and to act “peacefully”. He denied organising the protest but said he wanted to direct the crowd to a safer area.

Warren admitted making contact with Patronus but claims it was a push and it didn’t cause the horse any suffering or distress. He denied making any contact with Penelope and this appears to have been accepted by the court.

On Friday 4 November 2022 Warren appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court via video-link from HMP Belmarsh to be sentenced for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal in relation to Patronus.

During the sentencing, Ms Malkinson said Warren had five previous convictions for nine offences, none of which were relevant.

The court was told that he is currently on remand at HMP Belmarsh for other matters.

Sentencing Warren, District Judge Paul Currer, said he “slapped the backside of the horse” and behaved “particularly aggressively in motivating the crowd around you”.

He said Warren approached Patronus as other police told him to move back and “struck it on its hind quarters”.

He added: “It was a deliberate action to escalate things, largely led by you and your bad behaviour.”

Sentencing | jailed for 12 weeks; £128 victim surcharge and £620 costs.

Kings Langley, Hertfordshire: Tyreicke Williams

CONVICTED (2022) | Tyreicke Williams, born 20 August 1994, originally from Brixton but currently of Home Park Mill Link, Kings Langley WD4 8FW – threw a wooden stick so hard at his dog that it snapped.

Williams was caught on camera attacking bull terrier Nova in his garden in September 2021.

Nova was curled up by a fence when a half-naked Williams is seen launching a piece of wood.

RSPCA inspector Stephen Reeves said sound from a video captured by a neighbour indicated Nova was hit multiple times.

He said: “The video started out of shot of the incident, but you could hear something being hit twice, the video then pans to a male.

“The male hit the dog so hard with the wooden pole that the wooden pole broke on what appeared to be the third strike and he then threw the other part of the wooden pole at the dog.”

The video of the attack on September 9 in Home Park Mill Link Road was sent to the RSPCA in October, with the dog subsequently seized from Williams by police.

Nova remains in the care of the RSPCA and is said to be doing “really well”, but the animal welfare charity said a vet wrote in a report it was their opinion Nova “experienced significant fear and pain”.

The vet added: “Nova’s body language is submissive. He has positioned himself to make himself as small as possible, his tail is tucked between his legs and his head carriage is low with flattened ears. These are classic signs of fear in dogs.”

Sentencing | 18-week suspended prison sentence; 100 hours of unpaid work; costs totalling £4,762, Disqualified from keeping dogs for five years.

Vauxhall, South London: Sarah-Jane Belle

CONVICTED (2021) | Sarah-Jane Belle, born 11 January 1990, of Simpson House, St Oswalds Place, Vauxhall, London SE11 5JF – failed to get treatment for her dog’s fist-sized mouth tumour, leaving him to slowly starve to death.

Mother-of-four Sarah Jane Belle was banned from keeping dogs for two years after she left her elderly dog, Rio, with a large tumour in his mouth which meant he struggled to eat.

Belle pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the dog.

RSPCA inspector Natasha Wallis investigated after the charity received a call from the Blue Cross in October 2020.

Rio was taken to the animal charity on October 21 and rushed in for emergency care over concerns he wasn’t breathing.

The emaciated dog and had a very large mass in his mouth and sadly had already died by the time he was presented to the vet.

Inspector Harriet Dalliday who collected Rio’s body, said: “The dog was extremely thin with all ribs, spine and hip bones protruding.

“There was a large tumour stemming from the inside of the dog’s mouth and was approximately the size of my fist.”

Wimbledon Magistrates Court heard how the animal had a very large mass protruding from his mouth approximately 8cm by 5cm.

It prevented the closure of his mouth and a post-mortem showed he was suffering from bone cancer and was severely emaciated.

Rio’s ribs, spine, and pelvis protruded from his body and could visibly be seen from a distance.

On October 21 last year, when he was examined after his death, he weighed 9.8kg.

But before that on November 9, 2017, he had weighed 22kgs which meant he had lost more than half his body weight.

Animal abuser Sarah-Jane Belle from Vauxhall, Lambeth, South East London

A vet report stated: “In my professional opinion, Rio would have had considerable trouble eating due to his inability to close his mouth property and apprehend food due to the size of the mass.

“Rio’s emaciated appearance suggests chronic malnourishment over the past few months.

“I fail to believe Rio had been eating normally the night prior to his presentation as suggested by the owner.

“In my opinion, Rio’s owner failed to seek veterinary attention for his severe weight loss, which would have been obvious, and as a result failed to protect him from hunger and thirst.”

Sentencing: 12-month community order with 90 hours of unpaid work; £195 in costs and charges. Banned from owning dogs for two years (expired June 2023).

Tulse Hill, London SW2: Sydney Fraser

CONVICTED (2017|) Sydney Fraser, born c. 1962, of Ouseley House, Christchurch Road, Tulse Hill, London SW2 3EY – flushed ex-partner’s hamster down the toilet in sick act of revenge

Sydney Fraser from Tulse Hill, London, flushed his ex girlfriend's partner down the toilet

Fraser drowned the helpless rodent after a series of bitter arguments with his girlfriend Maria Jefferson.

He forced her to drink and kept her in a darkened room before the final outrage with her beloved pet, Camberwell Magistrates’ Court heard.

Fraser is believed to have pulled the flush several times before the animal was sent to its watery grave in the sewers.

Ms Jefferson had complained to friends that Fraser was abusive to her and the police had been informed.

Fraser plied her with drink so she would do his bidding.

Terry Curtis, prosecuting, said: ‘Fraser wanted her to drink to control her. He encouraged her to drink.

‘In one argument he pushed her in the chest and she fell backwards.

‘He unplugged the TV and took out the lights because he knew she was afraid of the dark.’

When Ms Jefferson finally left him on December 5 2016 he bombarded her with text messages and phone calls begging her to come back.

Unfortunately, Ms Jefferson had left her pet with Fraser.

‘Some time before Christmas she went to the flat,’ Mr Curtis said.

‘She asked where the pet hamster was.

‘He said that he had flushed it down the toilet.’

Ms Jefferson was devastated because she had loved taking responsibly for cleaning and feeding the animal.

‘The hamster was a symbol for showing her that she could be responsible for someone other than herself,’ Mr Curtis explained.

Defending himself, Fraser was unrepentant.

Addressing the court from the dock he said: ‘I have nothing to say.

‘I just want to get on with my life without her hanging around me.’

Magistrate Lillian Heyworth-Dunne said: ‘We are going to take the exceptional of trying this with a conditional discharge for a period of 12 months.

‘If you stay out of trouble and your not charged with any offence it will go away.’

Fraser admitted criminal damage and he was given a 12 month conditional discharge.

Sentencing: 12-month conditional discharge

Stockwell, London: Patrick Bell

CONVICTED (2015) | Patrick Bell, born 28/12/1962, of Morat Street, Stockwell, London SW9 0RP – beat a dog with a metal pole, then attempted to strangle her and suffocate her by putting her head in a plastic bag.

Abused dog Jinx
Jinx was in a pitiful state after being terrorised by her evil owner Patrick Bell from London

Bell pleaded guilty to animal welfare offences relating to a Staffordshire bull terrier called Jinx.

He admitted two offences of causing unnecessary suffering by subjecting the female white-and-tan dog to blunt force trauma, and not providing for her needs.

The RSPCA was called with concern in July 2014 after a witness reported Jinx being beaten.

RSPCA inspector Esther Lincoln said: “I arrived at the address to find Jinx a quivering wreck under a makeshift kennel in the back yard. She was so terrified she refused to move and had to be carried out of the address.

“This is hardly surprising as this sounded like an incredibly brutal and vicious attack. A witness saw the defendant hit Jinx multiple times about the head and body with a metal pole and then put her head in a carrier bag and attempt to strangle her. Horrible.

“A vet examining her found bruising all about her neck back and flanks, and several sore points which were tender to the touch – a classic sign of beating.

“The good news though, is that there has been a happy ending. Jinx has made a full recovery and built up such a bond with one of the girls looking after her in her boarding kennels that she has been permanently adopted by her.”

Jinx is now in a loving new home
Jinx now has the loving home she deserves

New owner Jessica Lynn said: “Jinx was so withdrawn at first – she would not respond to any of the staff’s attempts to comfort her.

“But when I was introduced to her, she just came up and licked me. It was as if she chose me. We have been inseparable ever since and it was obvious I had to adopt her.

“She is a lot calmer now but she still has her moments when there is a sudden movement and she has a bit of a panic attack until I calm her down. It will haunt her forever, what happened to her, but we have a happy life between us.”

Sentence: total of 14 weeks in jail, seven weeks in prison for each offence, to be served concurrently; £80 victim surcharge. Disqualified from keeping animals for life.
