Vauxhall, South London: Alexander Warren

CONVICTED (2022) | Alexander Giovanni Warren aka AJ Carter, born 17 September 1987, of Daryngton House, Hartington Road, Vauxhall, London SW8 2HR – hit a police horse during a demonstration.

Violent thug Alexander Warren, a former heavyweight boxer, was jailed for striking a police horse.

Former professional boxer Alexander Warren was part of an anti-Covid vaccination rally outside Newcastle upon Tyne civic centre in August 2021 when he struck a police horse called Patronus on the backside. It was alleged that he threatened to knock the horse out. He was also accused of slapping another horse named Penelope on the face after telling her rider to “get that fucking horse out of my face”.

Giving evidence, Sgt Coates, who was riding Patronus, told the court he was at the top of Northumberland Street with three other mounted officers when the protest turned “particularly threatening” and they made their way over to the green in front of the Civic Centre, opposite Percy Street. He described Warren having a megaphone and goading the crowd to follow him to try and break the police line.

Sgt Coates continued: “The defendant was trying to get past me and Patronus. When he walked past he threatened to knock Patronus out. He then assaulted the horse. He hit Patronus’s back end, to the left hand side, with his flat hand.”

Sgt Coates said Patronus reacted by being startled and anxious and he had to concentrate on keeping her stationary. When asked what he thought Warren’s intention was by hitting the horse, the officer said: “I think he intended for the horse to bolt with me on it.”

Also giving evidence was PC Adair, the rider of Penelope, who Warren allegedly targeted next.

She told the court that she first noticed Warren when he was inciting the crowd to break the line of police officers, who were stood behind her.

PC Adair added: “I bent down and said to the defendant that he couldn’t go that way. The horse turned her head at the same time and the defendant got more agitated and shoved the horses face and said “Get your fucking horse away from me.

“He didn’t stop, he carried on walking. At that point, [another officer] on a horse called Pluto got hold of the defendant’s rucksack to try and get him detained.”

The court heard that a crowd then encircled Pluto and Warren managed to wriggle free and flee. He was, however, later arrested.

Asked how Penelope reacted when allegedly struck by Warren, PC Adair said: “She was startled and taken aback. When you raise your hand quickly at a horse, it doesn’t matter how much training you give them, they will always get a fright.”

Giving evidence, Warren said the police horse was being made to walk in front of him to block his path.

He said that police horse Patronus had “pecked” his head several times and said he was “shocked” by what he described as an “attack” on him, but denied that he had lost control of his emotions and temper before the incident.

He said: “It was quite a shocking incident because the horse was pecking my head. I was being attacked and felt aggrieved and wanted to get out of the situation. Every time I tried to get out of the situation he [the officer] was making the horse step one side in front of me.

“I stepped to my right and pushed the horse’s hip and bum area to get the horse and officer away from me to get past the horse.”

Warren said that on a scale of one to 10 he used a level four of force in doing so.

The defendant said he had travelled to protest with intention of “raising awareness” and to act “peacefully”. He denied organising the protest but said he wanted to direct the crowd to a safer area.

Warren admitted making contact with Patronus but claims it was a push and it didn’t cause the horse any suffering or distress. He denied making any contact with Penelope and this appears to have been accepted by the court.

On Friday 4 November 2022 Warren appeared at Newcastle Magistrates’ Court via video-link from HMP Belmarsh to be sentenced for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal in relation to Patronus.

During the sentencing, Ms Malkinson said Warren had five previous convictions for nine offences, none of which were relevant.

The court was told that he is currently on remand at HMP Belmarsh for other matters.

Sentencing Warren, District Judge Paul Currer, said he “slapped the backside of the horse” and behaved “particularly aggressively in motivating the crowd around you”.

He said Warren approached Patronus as other police told him to move back and “struck it on its hind quarters”.

He added: “It was a deliberate action to escalate things, largely led by you and your bad behaviour.”

Whitby, North Yorkshire: Geraldine Gibson

CONVICTED (2022) | Geraldine Gibson, born 16 October 1945, of Netherby Close, Sleights, Whitby YO22 5HD – neglected 25 seaside donkeys.

Geraldine Gibson, who ran a beach donkey business for 30 years, is now banned from keeping equines.
Geraldine Gibson, who ran a beach donkey business for 30 years, is now banned from keeping equines.

Gibson (aka Margarite Geraldine Gibson), a licensed donkey operator, was banned from keeping equines for life after the RSPCA found 25 donkeys in a neglected state and housed in poor conditions.

She pleaded guilty to four animal welfare offences when she appeared before Scarborough Magistrates’ Court on January 12, 2022.

The court heard how the RSPCA was sent to the address along with staff from the Donkey Sanctuary on February 24, 2021. following concerns about the welfare of a number of equines in her care.

The seaside donkeys were badly neglected and kept in poor conditions.
The seaside donkeys were badly neglected and kept in poor conditions.

RSPCA inspector Claire Little heard Gibson had 13 donkeys, 11 ponies and one mule at the site.

They were housed in a paddock which had many hazards, while other mules, donkeys and ponies were crowded together in stables with little or no access to forage or water.

Claire said: “It was apparent when looking at the various stables and sheds being used that there was no hay available and no water available to the animals that were inside the buildings.

“There were multiple donkeys seen in the barn / lean-to area at the rear of the stables.

“The ground appeared to comprise a thick layer of straw and faeces.

“There was a water butt outside that appeared to be collecting rain water- this water was not available to the animals, but they were seen straining to access it.

“There were three stables all in a state of disrepair.

“All the doors were held together with rope or baler bind, as bolts were either missing or unable to meet due to the bowing wooden doors and the accumulation of deep wet litter bedding.

“There was no hard standing and the overcrowded stables contained multiple animals.”

The seaside donkeys were badly neglected and kept in poor conditions.

Inside the stables a number of donkeys were found to be underweight with their spine and pelvis clearly visible; while others had poor coats, with lice and scabs visible on their bodies.

Some also had other health concerns – such as lameness and dental issues.

Others had long overgrown hooves so were struggling to walk and others had a hoof infection known as thrush, which was so severe it was causing their feet to bleed.

Eight ponies in the field also appeared in poor condition and there was very little grazing available and no supplementary hay was visible.

Gibson told Inspector Little she had struggled with veterinary care and farrier treatment due to Covid 19.

This caused her to struggle financially and a GoFundMe fund-raising initiative had previously raised £22,000 and Gibson said she still had some of that money but was trying to make it last.

She was offered relinquishment as an option to reduce the number of animals in her care and related costs, but declined the offer.

The RSPCA advised Gibson that she would need veterinary care for some of the equines as well as farrier care and was given a chance to improve the care of the animals and their living conditions.

Further on-going support and help was offered but it soon became clear further intervention was needed.

On a return visit it was found that no improvements had been made and there was no hay or water for the stabled donkeys and ponies.

Gibson signed over 25 equines into the care of the RSPCA and The Donkey Sanctuary.

The court heard how the RSPCA, The Donkey Sanctuary and World Horse Welfare have been involved with the defendant since 2016 on an ongoing basis in an effort to assist her improve equine welfare.

The RSPCA said all the animals were now recovering either at its Fell Edge Animal Centre or in the care of The Donkey Sanctuary.

Sentencing: 14-week prison sentence suspended for two years; a total of £478 costs and charges. Lifetime ban on keeping equines.

But Sheriff John McCormick told him: “You were in fact one of the ringleaders of this mob.”

Police officer Sergeant Mark Stewart attended the match and he described the violence as the “worst riot” he had ever seen.

“When I got there, Airdrie fans were being blocked from getting into the ground by Celtic fans,” he said.

“There were families trying to get in and bricks and missiles getting flung as well as spitting and throwing lit cigarettes.

“It was very aggressive and this was the worst riot I had ever seen.”

Maguire’s lawyer pleaded with the court not to jail his client due to his family responsibilities but that argument cut no ice with Sheriff John McCormick who sent him straight to prison

The officer told the court that Maguire was “directing others” during the violent incident and said he saw him attack the three police horses outside the ground.

He added: “I asked him to move and he punched my horse Oban on the muzzle which caused him to react.

“It was a full-blown punch and he also punched police horse Glasgow on the face.”

Sgt Stewart said another police horse Nerston was also punched later on.

Maguire was described as a “prime mover” in the violence orchestrated against police.

Lawyer Michael McKeown, representing Maguire, unsuccessfully urged the sheriff not to jail his client.

Mr McKeown said: “He has got significant family responsibility. He is looking after his young baby and three other children.

“He works as an engineer and earns £600 a week. That employment is still open to him. He also has a business interest in a cafe.”

The court heard that Maguire told social workers who compiled a report on him that he was on ‘an alcohol binge and had no memory of the offence.

The court had heard that Maguire was previously banned from every football ground in the UK.

He was also out on bail at the time of the police horse attack in January 2019.

Maguire was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to police horses Nerston, Oban and Glasgow, assaulting two police officers and acting in a threatening and abusive manner.

Sentencing: 10 months in prison. Banned from every football ground in the UK for a further five years.

Knotty Ash, Liverpool: Ronnie Wheeler

CONVICTED donkey ride operator Ronald Wheeler aka Pete Nightingale, born 6 October 1976 and since deceased, of Haydn Road, Liverpool L14 – let his horse die slowly and painfully from poisoning.

Donkey ride operator Ronald Wheeler's horse Oscar had to be euthanised after being poisoned by ragwort.
Cruel and irresponsible: Ronald Wheeler’s horse Oscar had to be euthanised after being poisoned by ragwort.

Ronnie Wheeler admitted three charges of animal neglect at Liverpool Magistrates Court.

Wheeler left his horse Oscar grazing in a field in Fazakerley which contained the poisonous weed ragwort – which is deadly to horses – despite being warned by Liverpool council to remove it.

The RSPCA were called to the field on August 6, 2018, after receiving reports from members of the public who were concerned about the horse’s welfare.

When inspector Joanne MacDonald arrived at the scene with a veterinary surgeon they could see the horse was staggering around and collapsing.

They realised he was blind, was struggling to stand and was unable to swallow.

Ronald Wheeler with father Eric Wheeler of Thomas Lane, Liverpool L14 who also faced horse cruelty charges. The outcome of the case against him is currently unknown.

The vet decided Oscar needed to be put to sleep to end his suffering and a post-mortem examination confirmed he had been poisoned by ragwort after being exposed to it for many weeks or even months.

The vet also described Oscar as having a low body score for his physical condition, and also revealed a significant worm burden.

The Wheelers operate a donkey ride business called Waterfront Carriages and Donkey Hire

The court heard two months before, on June 15, the council had sent a letter to Wheeler urging him to remove the weed which in some places had grown to three feet tall.

Inspector MacDonald said: “It was an awful case to deal with as poor Oscar was clearly suffering. He was collapsing and the ragwort had caused his blindness which meant he was walking into things and was clearly in a distressed state.

“To make matters worse Wheeler had been told previously to remove the ragwort by the council but he had failed to do this.

“Responsible horse owners should know ragwort is damaging to the horse’s liver when eaten. The toxic effect builds up over time, causing irreparable damage.”

Sentencing | jailed for 12 weeks; ordered to pay £786 costs and a £115 victim surcharge. Banned from keeping equines for 10 years (expires August 2029).

Spurling admitted attacking police horse Quantock, a police officer and another man outside a bar in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, in July 2018.

North Somerset Magistrates’ Court heard Spurling cheered after he punched Quantock in the head and tried to strike PC Mark Hodder in the face.

Sue Cameron, representing Spurling, said her client had punched the horse after being “pushed back by the animal”.

“We accept that any physical contact of that nature with an animal is going to cause unnecessary suffering. There wasn’t any injury,” she said.

“There may have been a psychological impact on the horse but he is described as being well the following day and grazing in the paddock.”

Sentence: 10-week community order and 10-week curfew. £500 compensation to his human victim.
