CONVICTED (2014) | Ryan Young, born 22/04/1992, of Windermere Road, Hartlepool TS25 1QT – refused to seek vet treatment for an emaciated Yorkie’s horrific injuries.

Injuries suffered by the dog, named Princess Armani, included a badly damaged eye that was falling out of its socket and a skin infection that was caused by boiling water or hot oil. No plausible explanation was given for any of the dog’s painful injuries.

Career criminal Young, who has dozens of convictions, had been left to look after Princess Armani. He did not take the little dog to the vet after she suffered the eye injury supposedly in a dog attack.

Princess Armani has now made a full recovery and has been rehomed. “She is a happy dog and I’m sure she will be fine from now on,” added Inspector Wilson.

RSPCA inspector Clare Wilson said: “It was an awful case to deal with. I have never seen an animal with such horrendous injuries.

“You’ve got to wonder how she got those injuries. It was awful somebody could let that happen to a dog.”

Sentence: six months in prison suspended for 12 months with supervision; £260 costs. Banned from owning any animal for 10 years (expires September 2024).

CONVICTED (2014) | Amie Elizabeth Smith (aka Amy Blackler), born 14/07/1991, as of April 2020 of Norbury Grove, Walker, Newcastle upon Tyne NE6 2TA – left a dog to starve to death in squalor.

Smith had locked the starving animal – a white Staffy named Rocky – in a filthy kitchen, without access to food or water, where he was surrounded by mounds of rubbish and faeces.

His emaciated body was found near an empty water bowl and tin cans which he had attempted to eat in his desperate state.

When his body was examined by a vet, he was found to be just over half the weight he should have been.

Smith pleaded guilty to one count of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal between February 5 and March 26 2014.

Prosecutor Denise Jackman said: ‘The officer found a deceased, white Staffordshire bull terrier lying on the kitchen floor among a vast amount of rubbish. The body of the dog was emaciated and had ribs protruding.

‘There were faeces all over the floor. There was an empty water bowl and tins of food with dints in, as if the dog had attempted to open the tin with his teeth.

‘The RSPCA inspector said there was an over-powering smell and that the kitchen was extremely cluttered.

‘She noticed the tins of dog meat, which had been chewed.

‘The vet said the unnecessary suffering of starvation would have caused immense stress. The hunger would have caused loss of consciousness before death occurred.’

When interviewed, Smith said she asked a friend to look after the dog while she went away to Blackpool between February 5 and March 26, 2014.

David Parish, speaking in her defence, said Smith suffers from mental health issues and was ashamed of her actions.

He said: ‘This is a lady with significant difficulties and significant mental health problems.

‘She was the victim of domestic violence, which occurred where the dog was found. She was not able to cope and felt she couldn’t return to the property.

‘She is deeply sorry, deeply upset and deeply ashamed at what has happened.’

Sentence: suspended six-month prison sentence, three-month curfew; £700 costs. Lifelong disqualification from owning an animal.

CONVICTED (2014) | Veronica Reid, born c. 1972, and Jon Paul Allen (aka Jon Paul Davis), born c. 1987, of Woolpack Meadows, Trowbridge BA14 7SU and Paul Brown, born 12/03/1962, of Okehampton Road, Exeter – tied a noose around collie’s neck and hung him with a rope from the attic, punched and kicked him to ensure she was dead.

Veronica Reid and Jon Allen pleaded guilty to charges of causing unnecessary suffering to a collie by hanging him until he died. A third defendant, Paul Brown, pleaded guilty at the court separately.

The court heard how Allen and Brown went to a vets practice in Trowbridge on January 17, 2014, to inquire about having the dog, a collie named Shandy, put down claiming he had become aggressive.

When the vet told them it would cost ‘more than £100’ , the pair took matters into their own hands and decided to kill the dog themselves.

It took up to 10 minutes for the dog to die by hanging, Brown punched and kicked him to make sure he was dead. The trio then buried him in the garden.

Their crime came to a light during a conversation between Reid and a neighbour. The neighbour told the RSPCA: “[Reid] was sat waiting for a bus one day and we started having a chat.

“I asked her what had happened to the dog, as it used to bark constantly. She then told me it was gone. I asked her what she meant, thinking she had taken it to a dog’s home or something, and then she made a hanging gesture. She also told me that the squealing noise it made sounded like when you boil a lobster.”

Sentence: Brown – 18-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months, Reid – 18-week suspended jail sentence, 6-month curfew, Allen – 23-week suspended sentence and 300 hours’ unpaid work. All three abusers – 10 year ban on keeping animals (expires September 2024).

Darlington, County Durham: Jon Soley

CONVICTED (2014) | Jon Soley (may also use the surname Zanetti), born 13/10/1980, based at Corbridge Crescent, Darlington DL1 2QH but as at October 2019 living in Elliott Court, Darlington DL1 4FF – captured on video kicking his dog in the ribs and hitting the dog repeatedly in the face with a dead rabbit

Animal abuser and wildlife persecutor Jon Soley from Darlington, County Durham, UK — Jon Soley was only banned from keeping animals for three years after being convicted of cruelty to his dog.

Mobile phone footage played in court showed Jon Soley forcefully kicking his Patterdale Terrier, known as Billy, after the dog had caught a rabbit.

Onlookers can also be heard laughing and cheering as Soley repeatedly hits Billy in the face with the rabbit.

Wildlife persecutor Soley initially denied causing unnecessary suffering to the dog and another of failing to meet his needs by not seeking veterinary treatment for a mouth ulcer, but was found guilty following a trial.

He also admitted two offences under the Wildlife and Countryside Act of possessing a cage trap and attempting to take a wild bird.

Kevin Campbell, prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA, told the court: “He struck the dog and caused it to suffer. Anyone who treats a dog like that causes it to suffer.”

In mitigation, John Grierson said that while he agreed the footage was disturbing, his client had no previous convictions for animal cruelty and had kept dogs all his life.

He told the court Soley had not sought treatment for his pet’s mouth ulcer because it did not appear to be causing him any discomfort.

“Billy was a family pet – he went out for walks with the children in the family. He will regret the loss of the dog,” he said.

Soley was arrested during dawn raids in May last year as part of Operation Stockholm – a joint initiative by the RSPCA and Darlington police to tackle animal cruelty in the area.

Speaking after the hearing, RSPCA chief inspector Mark Gent said he was pleased with the result and hoped it would act as a deterrent for others.

He said: “This is a prime example of where we have undertaken a joint operation focussing on things that have been put on the internet and brought those people to justice.”

Billy was signed over to the RSPCA and magistrates ordered the destruction of the mobile phone and bird cages.

Sentencing: Ordered to pay £1,620 in costs, charges and vet fees. 12-month community order with 80 hours of unpaid work. A three-year ban on keeping animals (expired September 2017).

CONVICTED (2014) | backyard breeder Joanne Terry, born 03/07/1981, of 10 Winfields, Pitsea, Basildon SS13 1HQ – involved in dog-fighting, severe animal neglect, two dogs dead.

Joanne Terry, formerly of Third Avenue, Dagenham, was convicted and banned for life from owning any animal after being found guilty of animal cruelty offences. One of the dogs was in such a poor condition that he had to be put to sleep.

Despite the appalling nature of her crimes, Terry escaped a prison sentence.

Barking and Dagenham’s Street Enforcement team visited Terry’s home on 1 October 2013 when neighbours raised concerns. There they found two dogs attacking a dead dog in the rear garden. That dog had been killed in a dog fight.

During the visit, the officers also found a litter of eight bulldog-type dogs. The officers were concerned about the welfare and condition of the puppies so applied for a warrant to seize the dogs.

On 4 October 2013, the officers, dog warden and police recovered the eight puppies. The officers heard whining and found two emaciated adult bulldogs and recovered them as well.

All adult dogs and puppies were examined by a local vet but the adult male was so badly neglected that he had to be put to sleep. Following the conviction, the court gave custody of the dogs to the Council for rehoming.

Sentence: eight-week suspended prison sentence, £380 fine for animal cruelty, life ban on owning any animal.

CONVICTED (2014) | Hannah Katherine Bennett, born c. 1979, of Arras Road, Bovington, Wareham BH20 6JY – captured on video kicking and shaking her elderly pet dog

CCTV footage showed Bennett outside a shop on High Street in Wool, with the dog, Mace, following closely behind her. She then turned and appeared to say something to the dog before drawing back her right leg and kicking him so hard that he flew from the raised walkway through railings onto the adjacent car park.

Bennett, whose previous convictions include assault, drink driving and criminal damage, continued to pull and drag Mace by his collar after being remonstrated with by passers-by, but they eventually managed to get the dog away from her.

Veterinary examinations showed that 13-year-old Mace had tenderness to his abdomen and blood in his urine. Fortunately he recovered after about 10 days and was later signed over to the RSPCA.

Sentence: two-week custodial sentence suspended for one year; £80 surcharge. Five-year ban on owning animals (expired 2019).
