Moston/Harpurhey, Manchester: Adeline and Chris Stopher

CONVICTED (2013) | Adeline Anne Stopher, born 27/08/1962, of Attleboro Road, Moston, Manchester M40 5EN, and son Chris James Stopher, born 12/04/1988, of Church Lane, Harpurhey, Manchester M9 4HZ – watched their German shepherd slowly starve to death

Chris Stopher and his mother Adeline Stopher, who at the time lived together in Burnthorp Avenue, Blackley, were convicted in their absence of causing unnecessary suffering to the six-year-old female dog, known as Wilson.

The offence came to light when a driver for Manchester Dogs’ Home called at the house to pick up the dog for cremation. He was so appalled at the dog’s ‘totally emaciated’ condition he called in the RSPCA.

Animal welfare officers investigated the case and the Stophers were arrested.

Veterinary examination showed Wilson was less than half her normal weight and was so hungry before her death she had started to eat cloth. She also had a large tumour in her chest. Experts said she may have suffered for six weeks or longer before finally dying.

David McCormick, prosecuting, told the court: “Both accepted responsibilities for the dog and said it had died slowly of hunger.

“They agreed they should have taken it to the vet but made no effort to do so.

“Mr Stopher said he had no money on his phone. Mrs Stopher indicated she preferred the dog to die at home, rather than be put down by a veterinary surgeon.”

Mr McCormick said: “The cloth in its gastro-intestinal tract suggested it was ingesting foreign materials to satisfy its hunger”,.

No explanation was given as to why they hadn’t fed Wilson for several weeks.

Mr McCormick said: “They knew of the dog’s deterioration and did nothing.”

Jailing the pair, court chairman Wallace Johnson said: “Reports show you both have mental health factors but they were not linked to the offending behaviour.

“This dog died a slow death as a result of your neglect.”

Alexandra Patison, defending, said the pair had ‘very troubled’ backgrounds and were deeply sorry for what happened.

She said: “What they did wasn’t out of malice; it was a lack of understanding. They have a tendency to try and deal with things themselves when they need help.”

Sentencing: six months in jail. Banned from keeping animals for 10 years (expired January 2023).

Akita - the dog starved and neglected by Amy Martin and her family

Akita was discovered emaciated and with overgrown claws in September 2012 by RSPCA inspector Virginia Ross.

Inspector Ross found a baby gate had been placed across the door of the room to prevent the pooch from escaping.

Prosecutor Mark Jones said Chloe told the inspector that Akita had belonged to her sister’s ex-boyfriend.

The court heard that they intended to sell the animal but then neglected her for a month until she was taken away.

A forensic veterinary surgeon examined the dog and found that she weighed just 5.7kg – almost half her normal body weight.

Mr Jones added that the pooch was so desperate to find food that she had started trying to digest her bed.

Foul conditions in which Akita was kept

By November 2012, Akita’s body weight had increased to 10.65 kilos. She was eventually rehomed.

Dog killer Cy Whitham of Ipswich and surviving victim KD later renamed Lottie.
Cy Whitham was jailed for 18 weeks and banned from keeping animals for 15 years for leaving three dogs to starve to death. Only Lottie (pictured) survived.

Staffy KD, later renamed Lottie, survived her ordeal and later recovered in the care of the RSPCA. Two other dogs were starved to death by Cy Whitham and his mother Millie Whitham before they could be saved.

The dog, known as KD at the time, was found by a pest controller at the flat surrounded by excrement.

Speaking after the hearing, RSPCA Inspector Jason Finch said: “When I saw her I couldn’t believe she was still alive.

“When the pest controller opened the door, the dog came out and immediately started trying to scavenge for food or anything that she could eat and he gave her a couple of biscuits.

“I’ve not seen a dog that thin for at least 10 years – the poor girl looked like a bag of bones.”

The dog, who was later renamed Lottie, gained weight in the care of the RSPCA,

The bodies of two other decomposed dogs were also discovered in a shed at the property.

RSPCA Inspector Jason Finch estimated the dogs’ corpses could have been rotting for one month and said they were too decomposed to identify their breed or their cause of death.

But the Whithams both denied any involvement with the dead dogs found at their former home.

In September 2014 violent thug Whitham was sent to jail for eight months for beating up an ex girlfriend. Then in February 2018 he was given 28 months in custody for dealing heroin and cannabis.

Sentencing:
Cy Whitham – 18 weeks in jail;
Millie Whitham – 12 weeks in jail.
Both were banned from keeping animals for 15 years (expires January 2028).
