Weston-super-Mare, North Somerset: Lucas Slim-Fitzpatrick

CONVICTED (2023) | Lucas Slim-Fitzpatrick born 6 November 1996, most recently of Regent Street, Weston-super-Mare but with links to Plymouth, Saltash, Taunton and Wolverhampton – subjected an bull-breed puppy to a catalogue of violence.

Slim-Fitzpatrick, who promotes himself on TikTok as a mental health expert and also likes to showcase his ‘kindness’ to homeless people, was prosecuted by the RSPCA for assaulting and neglecting the 10-month-old bull-breed called Luna in Plymouth between June 1 and December 1, 2022,

He pleaded guilty to three offences under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 and was sentenced at Bristol Crown Court on December 7, 2023.

He inflicted “blunt force trauma, physical violence and multiple injuries of a non-accidental nature”.

He also failed to take steps to ensure the needs of Luna were met by not protecting her from “pain, suffering and injury and disease” and failed to provide “proper and necessary veterinary care and attention” for her injuries.

A vet who examined Luna said the dog had suffered blunt force trauma injuries in at least three separate incidents.

The RSPCA was shown doorbell footage from November 30, 2022 which showed Slim-Fitzpatrick riding his electric scooter in Mutley. while holding onto the lead of the dog, who was trying to follow behind.

A witness who contacted the police said he heard an animal in distress at the back of Slim-Fitzpatrick’s former address in Greenbank Road in Plymouth minutes later, the RSPCA said.

The court was told the witness saw Slim-Fitzpatrick “staggering around” on the scooter while talking aggressively to the dog before picking her up with both hands and throwing her six feet in the direction of a wall. He was later arrested.

When he was interviewed by police in December 2022, the defendant claimed Luna’s injuries – a broken left hip and pelvis, fractured jaw, cheekbone and wrists, three broken ribs, three broken teeth and a bloodshot eye – were caused by Luna being hit by a car and kicked by a horse.

He said her bloodshot eye was the result of her being attacked by a Jack Russell dog.

But RSPCA prosecutor Gregory Gordon told the court: “Expert veterinary evidence disproved the defendant’s various claims of accidental injury to Luna. For example, if she had been struck by a vehicle, there would have been evidence of skin abrasions or lacerations, and grit or oil in her hair.

“Radiographs indicated Luna’s different fractures were at different stages of healing, meaning that the injuries occurred on different dates. It has not been possible to identify the number of separate incidents from the injuries alone, but records indicate that injuries were sustained by Luna on at least three separate occasions, including June 29 and August 2 last year.”

On both of these dates, the defendant had been in contact with vets. However, in June 2022 he declined the vet’s recommendation that Luna undergo surgery for wrist fractures, citing the cost. He then failed to attend appointments to rebandage her wounds, instead using a pencil and sock as a homemade splint.

In August he phoned the vet to report Luna was eating painfully, but then failed to keep an appointment.

When RSPCA Inspector Miranda Albison attempted to make contact with the defendant in March and July this year to interview him about the allegations, he claimed he did not have a fixed address, but that he was staying with a friend in Birmingham.

In a statement read to the court, the inspector said: “The defendant said he was aware the RSPCA had been visiting his address, but that he was not prepared to be interviewed.

“I told him Luna was still in our care as he had not responded to my request to confirm we could rehome her. He became angry and said he thought he had already given permission and the dog was no longer anything to do with him.”

In mitigation, the court was told Slim-Fitzpatrick had experienced a troubled background and had spent time in the care system.

A judge said he had shown little remorse for his actions and told him: “This was prolonged, lengthy violence towards an animal in your care who should have been protected by you rather than becoming your punchbag.”

Luna was signed into the care of the RSPCA on July 5, 2023. The charity said she had recovered from her ‘horrific’ ordeal in their care. She was rehomed after undergoing surgery and extensive rehabilitation work to regain the use of her back leg.

Speaking after the sentencing, inspector Albison said: “The assaults carried out by this defendant on this poor dog started when she was a 10-week old puppy and continued until she was 10 months old. It was absolutely horrific as she was repeatedly beaten and suffered many fractures.

“Luna had surgery on her femoral head and that saved her back leg as the other option was amputation. Happily she is now doing very well and we have been able to rehome her.

“Without being provided with the Ring Doorbell footage by a member of the public we wouldn’t have been able to prosecute the defendant as he denied being in that area of Plymouth at the time of the assault allegation.”

Sentencing | 14-month custodial sentences to run concurrently on each of the three animal welfare offences and a further five-month prison sentence, to be served consecutively, for his breach of a suspended sentence imposed for an unrelated matter. Banned from owning animals for 20 years.

St George, Bristol: Joshua Ponsford

CONVICTED (2020) | Joshua Ponsford, born 28 May 1997, of 73 Clouds Hill Road, St George, Bristol BS5 7LG – prosecuted for the psychological abuse of his pet dog

Ponsford, who has at least one previous conviction for violence, pleaded guilty to one animal welfare offence after being prosecuted by the RSPCA.

The animal charity took Ponsford to court after hearing a recording of him verbally berating his dog, a rottweiler named Lulu.

Ponsford admitted his guilt and was banned from keeping animals for five years.

In the recordings, the dog owner can be heard shouting and screaming at his pet pooch.

During one recording, which was 59 seconds long, Ponsford can be heard saying: “Go on your bed, get in your bed, get in your bed now, get in your fucking bed now, go in your bed now, now, now you fucking stay there. You dirty little mutt.”

The recording also contains thuds and yelps before Ponsford can be heard yelling “now”, “You and your fucking ball dog. I’ve had enough of all your hiding toys, yeah, yeah”, and “shut it”.

A second recording, which is 57 seconds long, also included examples of Ponsford’s treatment towards Lulu.

His voice can be heard saying: “Going to walk to the shop again and get myself some bits. Don’t even think of robbing” before a dog is heard yelping, whimpering and barking.

He then yells “shut it” and “look at my flat bro, my flat is covered”.

The third recording of 17 seconds contains the sound of Lulu screaming before Ponsford is heard saying “I’ll fucking have you” followed by the sound of Lulu whimpering.

As the recording continues, Ponsford shouts “move” before the sound of repeated thuds and Lulu yelping followed by Ponsford saying “go back into the room dog”.

RSPCA inspector Miranda Albinson, said: “Throughout these recordings the male, who can be heard, is clearly angry and can be heard yelling at the dog.”

Ponsford, who has links to Weston-super-Mare denied he had physically harmed his dog, but admitted his behaviour was inappropriate and that it caused Lulu distress over a period of time.

Veterinary Surgeon David Martin said: “It is my expert opinion that undoubtedly Lulu suffered as a result of mental fear and terror as a result of the verbal abuse from Mr Ponsford as demonstrated on the audio recordings.

“It is well known and understood by the public that dogs respond to the tone and volume of the voice and that dogs are susceptible and will suffer from fear and distress if verbally abused particularly if this is recurrent or long lasting.

“Training and discipline of dogs is nowadays recognised as needing to be reward based so that positive achievements are rewarded and that negative behaviour is ignored and not reacted to.

“Physical and verbal abuse is no longer acceptable as part of dog training as it has been shown to be both ineffective and to cause the dog long term distress.”

Lulu was signed over into the care of the RSPCA and is currently at Bristol Animal Rescue Centre where she is still undergoing rehabilitation.

Staff says she is a lovely dog who has bonded well with her carers but still needs time to adjust to new situations before being found a loving new home.

Sentencing: 20-day rehabilitation activity requirement; six-week curfew; £290 costs and charges. Five-year ban which can be appealed after three years (expires November 2025).

Knapp, who’s a founder/director of a Bristol-based Christian homeless charity, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a Shetland pony gelding at Moor View Farm, Congresbury, between January 22 and February 14, 2020.

The nature of the cruelty or fate of the pony was not reported.

Sentencing: community order. Disqualified from keeping equines for five years (expires July 2025).

Bristol Post

Update August 2022

Bristol Live reported that Knapp, a private landlord with a portfolio of 34 properties in Bristol, was banned from letting properties due to the poor conditions her tenants were living in. The case taken by Bristol City Council’s Private Housing Team found the rogue landlord was repeatedly failing to meet required health and safety standards.
Knapp entered guilty pleas to multiple offences and was convicted of eight Banning Order offences. She will be added to the Governments database for Rogue Landlords.

A commenter on the online newspaper article recognised Knapp’s name and alleged that her animal cruelty conviction involved “beating up” the Shetland pony. This is unconfirmed, however.

Weston-super-Mare, Somerset: Brad Skipp

CONVICTED (2019) | Bradley Craig Skipp, born 17 August 1989, of Knightstone Court, Shrubbery Avenue, Weston-super-Mare BS23 2JX – intimidated and physically attacked his pet dog

Skipp, previously of Fosseway Cottages, Somervale Road, Radstock, attacked cane corso Thesesus after getting home to find the dog had emptied the contents of his fridge and washing machine and dumped items on the floor.

Concerns were raised against Skipp’s treatment of Thesesus while the pair lived in Radstock, between May 2018 and April 2019.

RSPCA inspector Miranda Albinson, who investigated the matter for the animal welfare charity, said: “A taped recording was made of Skipp, and in the recording Theseus can be heard yelping and screaming throughout, and thudding can be heard as though the dog is being subjected to a physical attack.”

Skipp denied using his fist to strike his dog.

He told the court ‘slapped’ Thesesus on the rear and denied physically harming the animal.

He did admit though to shouting at his dog on the day of the recording – April 19, 2019 – because he got back to his home to find Thesesus had emptied the fridge, a cupboard and washing machine all over the floor.

Magistrates convicted Skipp of causing unnecessary suffering.

Sentencing: 10-week curfew; fines and charges totalling £835. Banned from keeping animals for 10 years with the right of appeal after five.

Clevedon, Somerset: Jennifer Parnell

CONVICTED (2018) | serial animal hoarder and abuser Jennifer Parnell, born c. 1944, previously of Beaconsfield Road, Clevedon BS21 – breached a previous ban on keeping animals after eight cats were found in squalor at her home.

Serial animal abuser Jennifer Parnell

In April 2012 Jennifer Parnell, then living in Burnham-on-Sea, was banned from keeping dogs and cats for 10 years after being convicted of cruelty charges relating to three dogs and four kittens. Now her disqualification order has been extended until 2038 after eight cats were found in disgusting conditions at her current address.

Parnell had crudely white-washed the windows of her home in an attempt to hide the faeces-ridden rooms inside the property and the cats who lived there.

But when the RSPCA got into her home, they found the eight cats living in squalid conditions.

One of the cats was so poorly he had to be put to sleep. He had been left to suffer with a blocked bladder.

Sadly this little one had been so neglected he couldn’t be saved

Parnell was brought to court but failed to turn up and had to be brought back to court under a warrant.

She was convicted of three charges of causing animal suffering.

“This could have all been avoided if the disqualification order had not been breached,” said RSPCA acting chief inspector Stephanie Daly.

“The courts impose disqualification orders for a reason – to protect animals from suffering and neglect at the hands of people who have been convicted of doing so.

“We rely on the public to inform us if someone has breached a ban and take this very seriously – as do the courts,” she added.

The surviving cats will now be made available for rehoming.

Sentencing:
26 weeks in prison, suspended for two years; £2,000 towards boarding costs. Ban on keeping dogs and cats extended until 2038.

Update December 2018

We have been advised that Jennifer Parnell (who has been known to use aliases including the surname Stewart) has now moved to Ashcombe Road, Weston-super-Mare. We understand that this serial hoarder and animal abuser relocates often to avoid detection. Anyone in that road should keep an eye out for those giveaway white-washed windows.

Parnell also apparently keeps four horses in Portbury, near Gordano, which were not the subject of the cruelty  case. We also hear that two dogs were in her possession as well but the RSPCA’s prosecution only concerned her keeping of cats.

Please watch out for her. By all accounts this is no confused old lady, but a devious individual who has apparently left landlords, vets, farriers and others thousands of pounds out of pocket.

Weston-super-Mare, Somerset: Scott Spurling

CONVICTED (2018) | Scott Spurling, born c. 1995, of Weston-super-Mare – punched a police horse in the head during a drunken fracas

Spurling admitted attacking police horse Quantock, a police officer and another man outside a bar in Weston-super-Mare, Somerset, in July 2018.

North Somerset Magistrates’ Court heard Spurling cheered after he punched Quantock in the head and tried to strike PC Mark Hodder in the face.

Sue Cameron, representing Spurling, said her client had punched the horse after being “pushed back by the animal”.

“We accept that any physical contact of that nature with an animal is going to cause unnecessary suffering. There wasn’t any injury,” she said.

“There may have been a psychological impact on the horse but he is described as being well the following day and grazing in the paddock.”

Sentence: 10-week community order and 10-week curfew. £500 compensation to his human victim.

Bishop admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a mastiff cross known as General.

The court heard how he stabbed the dog to death “in anger” before leaving his body to rot inside his flat for several days.

General was found stabbed to death following a frenzied attack by his owner Wayne Bishop now of Weston-super-Mare, Somerset
Sick Wayne Bishop stabbed his pet dog, known as General, to death in a frenzied attack, and left his body to rot.

The dog was found by police officers in Bishop’s then home in Stalls Farm Road, Droitwich, after neighbours alerted them to the smell coming from the property.

Officers found General lying in a pool of blood and with a stab wound to his chest.

Dog killer: Wayne Bishop previously of Droitwich, now Weston Super Mare

Initially, Bishop told the RSPCA he attacked his dog but claimed it was after the dog had attacked him.

RSPCA inspector Rachel Hayward, said: “It’s horrendous to think that he was stabbed to death in such a brutal attack.

“Bishop had no injuries so we disputed his claims he had been attacked by General.

“He later admitted he stabbed the dog in anger and said at the time General wasn’t attacking him as he had first claimed.”

Sentencing: 18 weeks in prison, suspended for two years; 250 hours of community service; £865 in costs. Lifetime disqualification order on all animals.

Clevedon, North Somerset: Nigel Streater

CONVICTED (2015) | Nigel Streater, born c. 1964, of Hurn Road, Clevedon BS21 5AF – for the “inexcusable” starvation and neglect of a young German Shepherd who had to be put to sleep

Dog abuser Nigel Streater from Clevedon, North Somerset, UK, and his neglected German Shepherd Kai
Kai was so badly neglected by his cruel owner Nigel Streater he had to be euthanised for humane reasons

An RSPCA inspector that attended the home Nigel Streater shared with wife June and adult son Nathaniel and noted that the German Shepherd dog, known as Kai, was suffering from chronic starvation and a severe skin condition.

Very sadly Kai had to be put down days after being rescued because his injuries were so extensive he could never be re-homed.

A veterinary surgeon said Kai had been suffering for at least five to six months and was in obvious pain.

She believed the skin condition could have started with a simple flea presence which had been left untreated.

She also reported that he had suffered ‘chronic starvation’ and that he was ravenous when given food.

Streater told the hearing he was trying to treat Kai himself as he could not afford to take the dog to a vet.

RSPCA inspector Sarah Kenward, who discovered Kai, said: “I was appalled at the condition that I found Kai to be in.

“He was a beautiful, young German Shepherd and despite the pain he was in, he loved people.

“I understand that animals can be costly, particularly when an issue arises which needs veterinary attention. However, it is unacceptable that Kai suffered for such a long period of time. There were options available which could have helped Mr Streater and the fact that he chose to leave Kai in that condition is inexcusable”.

Sentencing 12-week custodial sentence, suspended for two years; 12-month community order with 150 hours of unpaid work; £1,080 costs and charges. Banned from keeping any animal for five years (expired 2020).
