Lincoln, Lincolnshire: Loizos Ydraiou

CONVICTED (2021) | Loizos Ydraiou, born September 1998, of Arboretum Avenue, Lincoln LN2 5JE – subjected his dog to a violent attack which included attempted strangulation.

Lurcher Oscar was subjected to a sadistic attack by his evil owner, Ydraiou.
Lurcher Oscar was subjected to a sadistic attack by his evil owner, Ydraiou.

Ydraiou, who works as a chef, was given a 12-week suspended prison sentence and disqualified from keeping all animals for five years, after inflicting violence on a dog — including strangling him.

An expert vet said in their report that when they examined Oscar he had bloodshot eyes. He also demonstrated pain on manipulation of his neck, and there was tenderness and swelling around the throat.

The fur around Oscar’s neck was shaved to enable it to be examined further, and the vet found bruising over his laryngeal area.

Ydraiou pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a lurcher dog by inflicting violence resulting in physical and mental trauma.

The court heard the RSPCA was provided with a video which appeared to show Oscar being strangled. RSPCA Inspector Laura Jones attended the location on April 16, 2021, with a signed vet certificate along with the police.

They met with the defendant who had the dog and the police took the dog into their possession. Oscar was then taken to a vet for examination.

RSPCA Inspector Jones said: “The male appears to remove some sort of cord from the top of his garden fence metal railing, he appears to wrap this cord around both his hands and pull it taught between his hands.

“It was about a foot in length when pulled taught between the male’s fists.

“He then enters a brick shed type outbuilding, you hear a dog yelp and bark from inside this outbuilding, then the male lifts a black smooth haired dog with white chest markings off its feet by its throat from out of the outbuilding and swings its full body weight mid air by its neck.

“I could clearly hear the dog gurgle and make a definite choking noise.

“The male then places the dog on to the ground in a sitting position still with his hands around the dog’s throat.

“The male straddles the dog from behind using his body to restrain the dog, he looks to be squeezing the dog’s throat area with both hands with force.

“This male then removes his left hand, the dog is now quiet, the male then lowers the dog’s head to the ground, the dog appears motionless.”

The vet said although the video shows Oscar suffering for only a short period of time, they did not feel this diminishes the act of cruelty he suffered.

The vet’s report stated: “It is my professional opinion that Oscar was caused to suffer firstly through being carried by his neck and then through the application of pressure to his throat.

“The sound Oscar makes after he has been moved outside and immediately prior to his dropping to the ground are hard to listen to and thankfully not often heard, but are consistent with him having an obstructed airway.

“Oscar appeared to be being strangled and in my opinion this would have been both painful and terrifying.”

Oscar has since been signed over to the care of the RSPCA and has now found a loving new home.

Sentencing: 12-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months; 20 Rehabilitation Activity Requirement days; 100 hours of unpaid work; total of £528 costs and charges. Five-year ban (expires November 2026).

Lincoln, Lincolnshire: Brian Buckthorpe

CONVICTED (2021) | Brian Buckthorpe, born c. 1956, of 90 Cannon Street, Lincoln LN1 1AG – breached his lifetime banning order; kept a guinea pig and rabbit in foul conditions; tried to hide evidence by attempting to flush the rabbit down the toilet.

Buckthorpe, who already had a lifetime ban on keeping animals for an unknown offence, kept a guinea pig named Clive in a cage so full of hardened filth and faeces his head touched the wire top. The guinea pig was in such poor condition with an untreated joint condition and lump on his anus, he had to be put to sleep.

As RSPCA officers were gathering evidence, Buckthorpe was heard repeatedly flushing the toilet. Investigators then discovered a “dripping wet” rabbit called Bright Eyes. It appeared that Buckthorpe had been trying to flush the rabbit down the pan.

Bright Eyes was taken in by an animal centre for rehoming.

Bright Eyes survived his ordeal which included a repeated attempt by his twisted owner to flush him down the toilet

Buckthorpe pleaded guilty to three offences under the Animal Welfare Act.

The court heard how he had struggled with mental health problems and gave him credit for his guilty pleas.

Sentencing: four-month custodial term, suspended for 18 months. He was ordered to pay £300 in costs plus a £128 victim surcharge. His lifetime ban on keeping animals will continue.

Dog killer Bradley Michael Harris from Lincoln

RSPCA inspector Geoff Edmond said: “This was a horrendous incident which caused the suffering and death of a dog and enormous distress to the dog’s owners.

“Harris was one of four people who were drunk and causing a disturbance in the communal hallway of a block of flats in Wellington Road in Bridlington, where two of them lived.

“The group were confronted by McGregor’s owners, a man and a woman who also lived there, about the noise they were making.

“The door to their home was kicked in and their two dogs escaped into the hallway.

“McGregor was stabbed twice by Harris. Veterinary evidence suggests he was held down when this happened. He managed to escape and was found a few minutes later, collapsed in a pool of blood under a table. He died from his injuries in the arms of one of his owners.”

Sentence: four months in jail; £125 victim surcharge. Disqualified from keeping animals for five years (expired December 2021).

Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire: Bilal Yilmaz

#MostEvil | Bilal Yilmaz, born 21 July 1990, previously of Hull but as of April 2021 of 4 Eton Court, Scunthorpe DN17 2PG – killed a pet rabbit by hurling her from a 40ft balcony – and smashed another against a brick wall.

Yilmaz, former owner of a pizza restaurant based in Beverley Road, Hull, had thrown the young female rabbit with such force her back was broken. She was then left to suffer for almost four weeks.

RSPCA Inspector Hannah Bryer found the grey domestic rabbit in a cardboard box in Yilmaz’s home, emaciated and immobile. Her hind legs were decomposing and saturated with faeces – she had been dragging herself around the house using just her front legs. The smell was very strong; Inspector Bryer was almost overcome as she rescued the rabbit and took her to a vet.

The vet found the rabbit had a broken spine and femur. He was horrified at the suffering she had endured, and appalled that Yilmaz, who had inflicted these injuries, had not sought treatment for her. He concluded the rabbit had suffered immensely through pain, hunger, and the inability to move freely. She was euthanased on welfare grounds.

Bilal Yilmaz
Yilmaz pleaded guilty to animal cruelty, and assaulting his wife and a toddler

In his defence, Yilmaz claimed he flicked the rabbit against the wall after it bit him. However, a vet concluded the rabbit must have been forcefully thrown to inflict the injuries.

Mr Brown said: “The vet said he was horrified by the degree of suffering this animal endured, especially considering the owner had inflicted the injuries and didn’t make any attempt to alleviate the suffering.

“This was a deliberate act of cruelty by the defendant, which resulted in the animal suffering for a prolonged period of time.”

Yilmaz laughed at police when they asked if he had hurt the animals.

Turkish Yilmaz also admitted trying to drag his wife, who was 15 weeks pregnant, into his car off the street and convince her to have an abortion.

The couple, who are cousins, were separated at the time of the assault..

He also admitted “accidentally” slapping a toddler across the face, which made her nose bleed and left a red mark under her eye.

Sentence: 20 weeks in prison. Banned for life from keeping animals.
