Convicted serial paedophile Ross Clifford operated a makeshift wildlife rescue centre from his home but was investigated by the RSPCA after they were alerted to dead and dying animals on the premises.

A vet examined the animals in Clifford’s care and found pigeons without their needs being met, including one severely injured pigeon that had been kept in a wicker basket with heavily solid newspaper on the base. There was no food or water or anywhere to perch.

Another pigeon was housed in a wardrobe in the bedroom, also without food or water.

A juvenile wood pigeon was found in a collapsible crate, with another collapsible crate used as a lid. A towel lined the base of the crate, and this was very heavily soiled with multiple faecal deposits, some fresh and others older and drying. No food or water was found in the crate.

Hedgehogs were also found in unsuitable conditions, including one found in a plastic cat carrier alongside a small quantity of dried food but no water.

The hedgehog was very lethargic and dehydrated with sunken eyes and pale mucous membranes as a result.

Two juvenile hedgehogs were found together in a collapsible crate which had wet shredded newspaper and tissue alongside food which appeared to be mouldy. They were both very lethargic and were lying motionless.

Another hedgehog, who had to be put to sleep because of the severity of his condition, was found in a plastic hamster cage without food and water with wet bedding which smelled of stale urine with an unsurvivable injury and dehydration.

In mitigation, the court heard that Clifford’s intentions in setting up a wildlife rescue at his home were good. He acknowledged that his premises were not set up to deal with wildlife rescue and that he fell short of the standards required by good practice.

Speaking about the case RSPCA Inspector Miranda Albinson said: “Injured captive wildlife is completely reliant on those providing care to ensure their needs are met. Sadly, in this instance, that responsibility was not fulfilled.”

Sentencing | 12-week custodial sentence to run concurrently to an existing sentence for unrelated offences.

Father-of-four Shane Smith was prosecuted by the RSPCA after leaving horses Mexican and Guinness without suitable care and treatment between November 19 and December 3, 2019.

Concerns about the welfare of the horses, who were kept on land off Sandy Lane in Romsey, were raised by World Horse Welfare which prompted a probe by the RSPCA.

Skewbald Mexican was described as extremely thin with very little muscle and fat over his body particularly around his back, with his spine and rib cage prominent through his winter coat.

Meanwhile, Guinness – a piebald – had an open wound along his spine which was covered in hair, scabs and purple antibacterial spray.
He was found wearing a single shoe and a large rug.

The vet who examined them found they were suffering as a result of failure to seek veterinary attention for Mexican’s weight loss, and for the wound on Guinness.

Sentencing: ordered to pay £1,000 in costs and £500 towards vet bills. Deprivation order on the two horses. Two-year ban on owning equines (expires March 2023). Both horses were signed over from Smith’s ownership.

Jonathan Hurst had claimed to be a self-taught ‘horse whisperer’ and trainer, but in January 2017 he was found guilty of two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to a pony at a yard in Hampshire.

The female pony – called Tanzin – was left with “absolutely shocking” spilt tongue and eye injuries which were not treated by a vet, the RSPCA said.

Hurst offered his services to Tanzin’s owner after portraying himself as a horse guru “with the skills to transform even the most wilful horse”, the RSPCA said.

The filly suffered “significant injuries” while under the care of Hurst at a yard in Longparish Road, Wherwell, from 9 March to 14 March 2016.

RSPCA inspector Jan Edwards said: “Tanzin had been left to suffer with absolutely shocking injuries.

“I have never seen anything like the state of her tongue.

“It’s callous to leave an animal to suffer in this way without proper veterinary treatment.”

She added Tanzin’s owner screamed when she first saw her pony’s “greyed out” eye, fearing she had been blinded.

Tanzin had refused to eat before the gash on her tongue was discovered, the RSPCA said.

Sentencing:
120 hours of unpaid work. Fined £300. No ban.
