Cheadle, Staffordshire: Greg Cashmore

CONVICTED (2024) | backyard breeder and wildlife persecutor Gregory Peter Cashmore, born 19 May 1985, of Churchill Road, Cheadle, but with strong family links to Longton Road, Knenhall, Stone, Staffordshire ST15 8TW and the Meir area of Stoke on Trent – allowed dogs to fight and left one so badly injured she had to have a leg amputated above the shoulder; failed to treat dogs injured during organised fights with wild animals.

Cashmore, a violent career criminal whose previous convictions include serious domestic violence and firearm possession, failed to take several injured dogs to vets for treatment. He was prosecuted by the RSPCA following an investigation.

One of the offences related to Star, a blue and fawn female French bulldog, who had been badly hurt while fighting with another dog.

Although Star received initial emergency treatment from a vet she was discharged with her owners failing to follow advice to follow up with further care. As a result, Star lost a leg above the shoulder.

Cashmore, ,whose father Darren Cashmore is a convicted badger baiter, also failed to meet the needs of a dark brindle bull lurcher known as Django and also failed to failed to arrange veterinary examination and treatment for a tan and white bull lurcher known as Thor, both of whom had injuries consistent with wild animal fighting.

In a statement provided to the court, RSPCA officer Jason Bowles, who led the charity’s investigation, said he entered the back garden in March 2022 after securing a police warrant via a side gate and saw a number of well-built kennels in good condition containing dogs.

One kennel held Thor, who had scarring to his muzzle and a swollen, inflamed joint to the right front paw.

Another kennel housed Django. He had scarring to his nose and muzzle and a healed lower jaw injury to the left side of his mouth.

Both Thor and Django were seized by police.

The court heard that inspector Bowles was then made aware of an incident on June 17, 2022 involving a French bulldog called Star – who he said he later recognised from being at the property on the day of the warrant. It was confirmed that Star sustained injuries after fighting with another dog.

In a written statement, attending officer Rachel Leafe said she met a woman who showed her Star. She said the dog looked ‘extremely lame on her left foreleg and was hardly weight bearing on it at all’.

She continued: “There was a discoloured fluid around the top of the left foreleg which was running down the leg and chest. The fluid looked very unpleasant. My first thoughts were that the injury looked infected.”

She asked the woman if Star had received veterinary treatment for the injuries and she showed her an email from a pet insurer authorising a claim which was dated June 15. 2022 and an email from a vet who saw and treated Star on June 5. 2022.

Inspector Leafe phoned the vets who confirmed Star was seen and treated – and they gave her initial emergency treatment and recommended that she was admitted for further treatment. However, this advice was not followed. Although it was said that Star went to another vet at a home address – no evidence of this was given.

It was agreed for Star to be taken for a veterinary examination by the RSPCA. After a full vet assessment it was found that she was suffering and was subsequently seized by police and placed into the care of the RSPCA.

In a written statement provided to the court, the vet who examined Star said: “In my experience the combination of staples and stitching present seems unlikely from a qualified experienced vet. The stitches removed of a thick black material, possibly cotton thread rather than recognised modern veterinary suture.

“Although some veterinary medicines (injectable antibiotics) and equipment (stapler) were at the premises it is my understanding that there were no oral medicines in appropriately labelled packaging or proof of veterinary care such as invoices presented to the inspector.

“In view of this, my findings and subsequent developments with the wound it is my professional opinion that this dog has been caused unnecessarily suffering from the June 7, 2022 onwards.

“The failure to seek professional ongoing prompt veterinary care (after the first initial treatment) with ongoing monitoring has resulted in a deep seated infection and bone pathology, directly leading to bone fracture and the necessity for urgent radical surgery.”

The court heard Star remained in intensive care from June 17 to July 4 while staff treated her for multiple infections. Sadly vets could not save her left foreleg which had to be amputated along with her shoulder blade in order for her to be saved. Star has since made a good recovery.

Cashmore pleaded guilty to three offences under the Animal Welfare Act. In mitigation it was heard that Cashmore has “struggled with his mental health”.

Before being sentenced, Cashmore signed over all three dogs into the RSPCA’s care. Star, Django and Thor, who has been in kennels, can all now be rehomed.

Following the hearing, RSPCA officer Bowles, said: “Star and Django have been in RSPCA foster care and both have been doing really well; Star has adjusted well to life with three legs.

“Despite going through a lot she is such a lovely dog and has really settled in with her foster carers; I’m so pleased she can now start her new life. When you have a pet you are responsible for ensuring they get the correct veterinary attention should they injure themselves or become sick. There’s no excuse for leaving an animal in such pain.”

Sentencing | 22-week custodial term, suspended for 12 months; 20 days of rehabilitation activity; 150 hours of unpaid work; £600 in costs and a £128 victim surcharge. He was banned from keeping all animals for just five years (expires February 2029).

Stoke on Trent Live

A second person, believed to be Cashmore’s now former partner Millie Moult, was sentenced in August 2023 after pleading guilty to one offence of causing unnecessary suffering by failing to follow veterinary recommendation to seek further professional veterinary treatment for the injuries Star had sustained.

She said she did not own Star or the dogs that caused her injuries and claimed she was told that others would be taking responsibility for Star. She was handed a 12-month community order with 100 hours of unpaid work and 10 RAR days and was ordered to pay £300 and a £95 victim surcharge.

In March 2023 Cashmore announced on Facebook that he was now in a relationship with a woman called Lea M Webb. Webb, who appears to be from Sale, Trafford, Greater Manchester. A photo of the happy couple suggested that the pair had at least one thing in common: a love for persecuting wildlife with dogs. Webb’s dog evidently bears scarring to his face, legs and body – all of which are injuries consistent with animal fighting most likely foxes and/or badgers.

Since Cashmore’s current relationship status on Facebook is ‘single’ these two may have gone their separate ways.

Additional Information

Following his animal cruelty conviction, a former neighbour of Greg Cashmore contacted us and alleged the following:

“A couple of years ago Cashmore and his then partner Millie Moult beat a puppy to death with a shovel. A neighbour came outside after hearing a dog screaming and saw them do it. The puppy was only about four weeks old. It looked like they were doing it for fun.

“The neighbour reported what she had seen to police but officers came out a week later, by which time there was no evidence that it had ever happened.

“No other witnesses came forward because everyone’s so scared of him.

“The neighbour was brave to ring police because that Greg is a full-on psychopath. He’s got a gun and tried shooting someone before.

“He is the type to set fire to his house with his own kids inside just to make a point.

“He pushed his ex, who he has two children with, down stairs while she had a new-born baby in her arms.

“He always gets off lightly because he makes a deal with the prosecution and grasses up drug dealers.”

Lorry driver Jonathan Daly pleaded guilty to one offence for transporting animals in a way that is likely to cause harm or undue suffering.

Daly was fined £400 and ordered to pay costs of £1723 for the transportation of four sheep.

Shepherdess Emma Stone, who operates from Racecourse Farm, Three Mile Lane, Whitmore, Newcastle-under-Lyme also pleaded guilty to the same offence.

She also pleaded guilty for an offence of permitting unfit animals to be exposed for sale in a market, in this case five sheep.

Stone was fined £415 and ordered to pay costs of £1723.

The case relates to a consignment of 53 sheep (36 ewes & 17 lambs) presented for sale at Leek Livestock Auctions Ltd at Barnsfield’s Junction Road on 21st July 2020.

Stone is employed to look after a flock of approximately 700 breeding ewes.

Jonathan Daly was the livestock haulier who transported the sheep.

Whilst carrying out a routine inspection at Leek Livestock Auctions on the day, Animal Health Officers from Staffordshire County Council’s Trading Standards service identified that five of the sheep were unfit for sale in a market.

Due to their ill health, four of the sheep had to be put down at the site and the fifth was taken to a local slaughterhouse.

The court stated that the offences were serious and that both parties made errors of judgement with decisions that could have been done differently.

Neighbours of Andrew Beech had witnessed him screaming and swearing at his blue Staffordshire bull terrier, Millie, many times in the months leading up to her violent death on 19 August 2019.

One witness described seeing Beech throw Millie’s bed into the communal yard and yelling at her aggressively. He then kicked her hard, causing her to cry out. The witness tried to confront him but Beech disappeared inside his flat before she could do so.

On the evening of Millie’s death horrified neighbours heard Beech yelling “you shit all over the flat” followed by sounds of a dog in severe distress, crying and screaming.

On August 21, Beech wrote the following on Facebook: “my Millie moo died, completely shocked, RIP”.

Dog killer Andy Beech from Biddulph, Staffordshire,

Rumours emerged on social media that Beech had killed Millie and one local animal lover, Nicola, decided to go to his house to confront him. Beech told Nicola that Millie had died from natural causes and said he had buried her body in local woods. However, Nicola had noticed bloodstains on the walls of his hallway and was unconvinced by his lies. She went through his bins and was horrified to discover remnants of a blood-soaked dog bed.

Police were called but were reluctant to investigate so Nicola, determined to get justice for Millie, decided to take matters into her own hands.

She posted an appeal for information on Facebook and was soon contacted by someone who said they would show her where Beech had buried Millie’s body – actually in a small plot in the car park to the rear of his flat.

Nicola took a shovel and found Millie’s battered body in a cardboard box. She was wrapped in what remained of her dog bed.

The box contained a message that said “Millie, I’m going to miss you every day” with dog biscuits, and a deflated ball.

Sick note left by dog killer Andy Beech from Biddulph, Staffordshire,

Nicola contacted the RSPCA who collected Millie’s remains and took her to a vet for examination. There it was discovered that she had died from a blunt trauma. She had several other traumatic injuries including a punctured liver and lung, a broken hip and internal bleeding. Almost every rib was broken.

Some injuries were older and had been inflicted on her months earlier, proving that this attack had not been a one-off.

The RSPCA prosecuted Beech but he denied the charges and continued to scream about his innocence to his friends and family and publicly on Facebook.

One local animal lover took to social media to write about the case:

PUPPY KILLER. This is Andrew Beech of Biddulph. It would be easy to Hate such a wicked coward but apparently his parents are even worse – banned from their home town of Biddulph. He only had the puppy for 6 months and was heard shouting and hitting it many times, but nobody said anything until HE put it on Facebook pretending it had died and he was devastated. But the puppy was located and DUG UP for a post-mortem ! They don’t come much lower than him, he has No Remorse – but shows how such bad rotten parenting Ruins lives. He’s been Violent all his life. His whole family are the same.

Faced with overwhelming evidence against him, Beech eventually pleaded guilty to two charges of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal as well as harassing an ex-partner.

The court heard Beechhad lost his job at a builders’ merchant following the social media backlash in the wake of Millie’s death.

Dog killer Andy Beech from Biddulph, Staffordshire,

Beech’s lawyer, Peter Howland of Turnocks Defence Solicitors, told the court that his client became frustrated with Millie following a change in his working hours causing him to be away most of the day and that “he kicked her because of her behaviour”.

Speaking about the fatal attack Howland said that his client “kicked the dog a number of times and, as a result of that, it died within a matter of minutes. He was shocked and didn’t know what to do.”

Howland claimed that Beech had been in the Army and had served in Basra “which has had an effect on his mental health.”

This cut little ice with the judge who told Beech: “You could not cope with owning the dog but you made excuses – it would not have taken a genius to give the dog to the RSPCA.

“Instead you subjected the dog to cruelty on a regular basis. This was not a one-off – and then you kicked this dog to death.”

Sentencing | jailed for 24 weeks. Banned indefinitely from keeping animals.

Quarnford, Staffordshire Moorlands: Jackie Brown

CONVICTED (2019) | Jackie Brown, born c. 1960, from Quarnford, Buxton SK17 0TB – failed to look after a lame horse riddled with worms.

Jackie Brown

RSPCA inspectors and police discovered the crippled Highland mare, known as Rosie, in a Staffordshire Moorlands field. She had misshapen and overgrown hooves, dental problems, and killer tape worms and strongyle worms in her intestines. She was later put down.

Now Rosie’s owner, NHS worker Brown, who also breeds and shows Ibizan hound dogs, has been banned from keeping horses for five years after pleading guilty to cruelty charges.

Rosie
Rosie was very sadly put to sleep on humane grounds

RSPCA prosecutor Roger Price told North Staffordshire Justice Centre: “The horse was obese, struggling to walk. The hooves were extremely long, misshapen and overgrown.”

He added: “Laminitis is a very painful condition and this horse was obese. The weight of the horse pushed down into the hoof and caused a bone to push out.

“That phenomenon causes extreme pain for the horse. It was described by the vet as a very painful condition.

“The vet also described the horse as crippled. It was rocking back on its four limbs. It was also weight shifting from foot to foot.”

Rosie's overgrown and misshapen hooves
Rosie’s hooves were overgrown and misshapen

The court heard the symptoms would have been evident for months and even years. Rosie had not been seen by a farrier for at least nine months.

The court heard Brown declined interview requests and instead submitted two statements.

Referring to news of the RSPCA visit, she said: “I was so distraught I crashed my vehicle en-route and had to wait for my husband to collect me. By the time I had travelled home she had been taken.

“She had not been lame long term, this can be confirmed by my neighbours. I was not aware that Rosie had an issue with her teeth. If I had been aware I would have got an equine dentist to visit. I was not aware she had a problem with her weight.”

Brown, who also runs a dog grooming business named A Groom With A View, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal. She also admitted failing to maintain the Highland mare’s teeth, failing to provide a worm control programme, and failing to deal with a collapsed wall which could have seen Rosie escape onto the A53 Buxton Road.

Magistrate Sue Spooner said: “We accept you feel great anguish over this matter. But we also feel that you had time to rectify the matter.”

Sentencing | ordered to pay a total of £5,361 in fines, costs and charges. Banned from keeping horses for five years (expires October 2024).
