Videos of drug-addicted mother-of-one Emma Parker cutting the hamster, known as Mr Nibbles, with a knife while he was still alive were circulated online, prompting an RSPCA investigation.

Two videos filmed at Parker’s home were sent to the RSPCA by a concerned member of the public.

Gordon Holt, prosecuting, said: ‘The two videos seen on social media showed the defendant with a hamster in a hamster ball.

‘The defendant is holding the ball with a knife in the other hand .

‘She takes the knife and plunges it through the opening of the ball moving the knife from side to side.

‘A spectator is heard laughing and says ‘you are a sick b* you are.’

‘The hamster can be heard repeatedly squealing, it is allowed to escape and runs around a while.

‘The defendant attempts to strike it with the knife, successfully at least once.

‘She pinches its neck to keep it still.

‘It is still alive and she uses the knife in a chopping and sawing motion over the middle of the hamster’s body.

‘In the second video the defendant eats the two halves of the dissected body.’

In one of the clips, a woman who is off-camera can be heard laughing as Parker devours the rodent.

A vet who watched the footage described the content as deeply disturbing and said the pet would have suffered both physical and psychological damage as hamsters were prey animals which could feel fear.

During a police interview, Parker admitted the video was of her and claimed she was helping the hamster to die after it had been bitten by one of her dogs.

Parker said the incident took place at her home in mid-May, but refused to name those filming the footage, telling police: “They are not nice people”.

In court, the mother-of-one admitted one charge of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal.

The court heard Parker had been made the subject of community orders in both 2021 and 2022 for offences of shoplifting, and had a long history of addiction to Class A drugs.

Chris Brewin, mitigating, said Parker had been targeted as a result of the video, with her home vandalised and dog faeces put through the letter box.

Passing sentence Judge James House KC told Parker he had to take into account that Parliament had recently raised the maximum sentence for such animal cruelty from six months to five years’ imprisonment.

He said it was “abhorrent” that violence had been inflicted on a defenceless animal for others’ entertainment.

“The hamster was injured at least twice and then while still alive cut in half,” the judge said.

“You are then seen holding a bottle of water and then eating the two halves of the dissected hamster.”

Speaking after the sentencing, RSPCA inspector Andy Bostock said: “We share the public’s revulsion at this horrific incident and we’d like to thank the police for their support in this investigation.

“This type of cruelty has no place in today’s society and was a heartless vicious attack on a defenceless animal.

“It has been upsetting and disturbing for everyone who has been involved in this case.”

Judge House said Parker’s cruelty had been “as serious as could be”.

Sentencing | one year in prison. A 15-year ban on keeping animals.

After reports from a member of the public, the RSPCA went to a property on Spindletree Court, Swindon, in August 2015. There inspectors found a nursing mother dog, Tia, shaking and in a skeletal state surrounded by her pups, all of whom were clearly suffering.

All of the dogs were removed from the property and taken to a vet who was shocked at their condition and said that Tia was the skinniest dog that they had ever seen. Sadly two of the dogs, including mother Tia, later had to be put to sleep on veterinary advice.

Owner Andi Kilgallon, a career criminal with multiple convictions, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to his pets by not providing them with sufficient food.

His lawyer told the court his client did not have the money to take the dogs to the vet, he was depressed and struggling with the break-up of his relationship with the mother of his children.

Social services had become involved in the care of his six-month-old son and four-year-old daughter.

Speaking after sentencing, RSPCA inspector Steph Daly said: “This was an awful case of neglect.

“When I found Tia she was a bag of bones and was just lying there in a training cage in the front room with no water to drink and just an old t-shirt to lie on. She was surrounded by her hungry, whimpering pups and she was starved almost to death. It was a heartbreaking sight.

“I just hope that this sentence goes some way to educating people that caring for your animals properly is not only the right thing to do but that it is also a prosecutable offence to neglect them in this way”.

Sentencing: 12-month community order, including 150 hours unpaid work, ordered to pay £200 costs to the RSPCA, a £60 victim surcharge and £150 in court costs. Disqualified from owning any animals for a period of five years (expired 2020).

Coventry, West Midlands: John Bagster

CONVICTED (2009) | John Michael Bagster, born 14/04/1988,  formerly of Stamford , Lincolnshire, and more recently (2019) of Stewart Court, Ransome Road, Gun Hill, Coventry CV7 8NX – subjected a dog to a litany of violent abuse.

Puppy Minty was taken in by Bagster at just 12 weeks old, but suffered a catalogue of sustained cruelty over a 3-week period.

In one early incident Bagster and his friend Thomas Robinson put Minty in a trolley and spun him around. When they took the puppy out he collapsed to the floor, dizzy – something the pair found hilarious.

The cruelty got worse. On one occasion Bagster punched Minty very hard to his hip with a clenched fist. The puppy let out a yelp and from that day onwards had a limp.

Less than one month after being adopted by Bagster, little Minty was subjected to a brutal attack when the yob hit him with a frying pan, repeatedly punched him and smashed him around in a trolley. The pup suffered a pelvic fracture, broken hind leg and a swollen and bruised leg and stomach.

Sentence:  21 weeks in a young offenders institution for each of three charges he faced. The sentences were suspended for one year. Bagster was also sentenced to 120 hours’ community service and ordered to pay RSPCA costs of £700.  Bagster was banned from keeping animals for 15 years (expires 2024).

Bagster’s equally cruel accomplice Thomas Robinson of Water Street, Stamford, was prosecuted separately for his involvement in Minty’s ordeal. He was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering to the dog and handed a 15-year pet ban, 80 hours of community service and ordered to pay £250 in court costs.
