Kingston upon Hull: Jack Carling

#MostEvil | Jack Carling, born 30/04/1994, previously of Euston Close, Hull and more recently (2019) living at 17 Lupton Road, Sheffield S8 7NE – tortured his two dogs with daily beatings; one dog had to have an eye removed, suffered a broken hip and leg and permanent facial injury. He later died from his injuries.

Gentle Staffie Biggie was beaten so badly by his cruel owner Jack Carling that he lost an eye and was left permanently disabled. Whilst he initially seemed to be recovering, he died from his injuries just one month after Carling was jailed.

Troy Allen, who lived with Carling in Farringdon Street, west Hull, said Biggie and his other dog Sophie lived in fear of their owner.

Prosecutor Philip Brown said: “Troy said Jack would get angry with the dogs, he witnessed him beating the dogs. He said they would get into the smallest of spaces to hide from him.

“He said he would beat them every day. He didn’t let them out, they would just stay on the sofa, scared.”

Biggie and Sophie were seized by the RSPCA on January 7, 2013.

Mr Brown said: “Vets said there was evidence of a self-healed fracture to the leg and a fracture to the hip.

“There was also an injury to an eye, which required it to be removed. That was caused by trauma.

“[Biggie] was also suffering a nasal discharge, which was treated with antibiotics but kept returning. It was causing such concern that vets decided to carry out an invasive, intensive operation to open up the nasal cavity.”

During the operation, vets noticed part of Biggie’s skull was ten times thicker than it should be. There was also damage to cartilage and tissue, which vets concluded was also the result of trauma.

Mr Brown said: “He was caused immense physical suffering by the repeated malicious trauma inflicted on him.

“He has experienced daily fear, wondering what would happen to him next. He is disabled for life. The vet says it is upsetting to think this lovely-natured dog could be subjected this degree of treatment.”

The court heard the dogs were also kept in “wholly unsuitable” living conditions, with the floor covered in urine and excrement.

When RSPCA inspector Hannah Bryer began investigating the case, Carling told her: “I don’t know who you think you are and I don’t care what you say.You won’t do anything anyway, they’re not that bad.”

Carling pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering, failing to prevent suffering from injury or disease and failing to provide a suitable living environment.

He has several previous convictions for violence.

Carling’s solicitor Michael Robinson said: “I have known Jack for many years and I am surprised at the extent of the suffering he accepts causing this animal.”

Carling had pleaded guilty at the first opportunity, he said.

Judge Rutherford said: “It is rare that I have seen a dog subjected to such acts over such a long period to of time to survive.

“The dog has been left disabled as a direct consequence. You have shown complete arrogance in the manner you have behaved towards the animal and those investigating this case.”

Just a month after his vicious owner was sentenced, Biggie very sadly succumbed to his injuries.

Sentence: jailed for three months and banned from keeping animals for life.

The court heard that Maggie had been run over on a Saturday evening,  just hours after Wynn bought her. Claiming that he couldn’t afford vet treatment Wynn tied chopsticks to the dog’s broken leg with red lace and Sellotape.

Friends Varty and Painter visited Wynn’s home the following day and the wicked trio decided to kill her.

Kevin Varty

Varty first tried to “choke the dog out” but when she showed signs of life Painter stood on her, and pulled her back legs over her head, breaking her neck.

CONVICTED (2009) | Barry Rock, born 27/04/1973, most recently of Osprey Drive, Dudley DY1 2JS, and his then wife Leanne Rock (now Priest), born 18/09/1978, currently (September 2020) of Cressett Avenue, Brierley Hill DY5 3XY – left a dog with multiple fractures, including a broken leg, plus burns on her body, smashed teeth and blindness in one eye

The Rocks each admitted two counts of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and a third count of not taking reasonable steps to ensure the needs of an animal in their care between May 2 and 20, 2008.

The couple’s terrier-cross Britney had multiple fractures including rib and hip injuries, a broken leg and burns on her body when she was examined by vets in May 2008. One of her eyes was so badly bruised it had turned blue and she had lost all sight in it.

Leanne Priest

The court heard Britney was presented to a PDSA vets practice by a relative of the Rocks who said the dog had trouble standing up.

X-rays revealed a series of fractures which had taken place over a prolonged period of time. Further examinations revealed a further seven fractures of teeth, swelling to her temple and a deformed ear. The vet alerted police.

Barry Rock told officers it was feasible Britney could have sustained the injuries herself because “she was always getting stuck behind things”. But Mr Nick Sutton, prosecuting, told magistrates this explanation was “inadequate”.

Barry Rock

Mr Richard Burch, defending, told the court the couple had four children aged between 10 months and eight years, one of whom suffers with autism and Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder. They simply “could not cope” with looking after their children and their pet, Mr Burch said.

The dog has since been rehomed in Cradley Heath and is battling back to full health with her new owners, who have renamed her Millie.

Sentencing: 12-week prison term, suspended for two years. Lifetime ban on keeping animals.

Chelmsley Wood, Birmingham: Dominic Playdon

Playdon, who according to his current (2022) Facebook profile is a “DJ, Producer, Artist”, was convicted of animal cruelty after the dog, a five-month-old Staffy named Sasha, had to have a leg amputated.

The court heard he kicked Sasha, causing severe injury, and then failed to take her to the vet for several weeks. When Playdon finally took the dog to an RSPCA hospital vets discovered the extent of the injury. Sadly, it was too late to save one of Sasha’s legs.

Gaynor Sutton, for the RSPCA, told the court: “Given the severity of the fracture and the fact that amputation was necessary, it is likely severe trauma had occurred.

“The lack of explanation and quiet nature of the dog meant vets suspected non-accidental injury.”

Playdon was also convicted of three charges of theft after stealing his neighbours bank cards and 15 counts of fraud for using the cards to purchase items including mobile phones.

After the sentence was passed, Mrs Sutton said she hoped Playdon’s punishment would serve as an example to other pet owners. She added: “I am pleased with the result, particularly the ban because it means other animals won’t be placed in serious harm.

“This is a serious offence, it was deliberate.”

Sentencing: jailed for four months. Banned from keeping animals for life.

Playdon’s Facebook business page is here. He trades under the name ‘DJ Domstep’.

At the time of the offence, Playdon was living in Church Road, Erdington, Birmingham but as of 2021 he lives in Chelmsley Wood (source: public electoral roll).

An ex-partner of Dominic Playdon described her time with him. The implications are that Playdon is a serial animal abuser and dog killer and domestic abuser. These must be treated as allegations but the source is reliable.

[Playdon] sat and told me all the gory details about how he strangled a puppy to death, called his mate to dump the body, got angry with the other dog and beat it up for going near him when he was upset that the puppy had died.

I also found out social services took his son from him and his ex at birth. He’s a real wrong’un. He’s manipulative, controlling and evil. He literally locked me in his flat to stop me going out he’s disgusting.
