Harlesden, North-West London: Glenn Calderwood

Evil Glenn Calderwood punched a helpless dog three times in the head then used both hands to force him into a hot tub at his home in Brent, north-west London. The attack, which took place on 20 January 2020, left the dog, named Toffee, yelping and crying.

Calderwood, who is originally from Scotland, denied causing unnecessary suffering to Toffee but was found guilty after a trial.

Stuart Bell, prosecuting, said: ‘A neighbour heard the dog yelling in significant pain and looked out of their window to see the defendant holding the dog by the scruff of its neck five foot above the ground.’

Bell added: ‘The defendant used both hands to push the dog under the water.

‘The dog had been yelping and then the neighbour could not hear the dog any longer.

‘The neighbour shouted ‘oi’ and he then let the dog out of the water and walked away. The dog was wet and had redness in the eye.

‘Forcing the dog underwater was a deliberate and gratuitous attempt to cause suffering.

‘The dog was in great pain and subjected to being under the water for many seconds.’

Wearing a grey suit and sporting a ponytail, Calderwood admitted his ‘behaviour was somewhat erratic’.

As magistrates considered the case he shouted from the dock: ‘I’ve have been anxious about this for over a year. Do I have to suffer any longer?’

Magistrate Michael Herlihy told Calderwood: ‘The attack was several blows to the dog and he tried to drown the dog in a hot tub.

‘These were deliberate acts which would have caused significant distress to the dog and its owner.

‘The attack was so serious is warrants a custodial sentence.

‘Your medical condition leads us to be able to suspend your prison sentence.’

The court heard that Calderwood has a history of violence and dishonesty with previous convictions including causing a disturbance on NHS premises, common assault, assaulting a police constable, and stealing from his place of work.

Sentencing: 20-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months; compensation to Toffee’s owner.

Elizabeth Blore admitted breaching an ASBO imposed at Willesden Magistrates’ Court on 24 May 2012 prohibiting her from keeping and feeding cats.

Blore and her brother Christopher Blore were evicted in 2012 after neighbours reported a ‘putrid smell’ caused by the piles of cat faeces in the garden and in the house.

They were told not to return to the house as council workers embarked on a three-month fumigation, during which mountains of rubbish was removed.

Skeletons of at least 15 dead cats were found rotting under binbags during the clean-up effort.

Martha Godwin, prosecuting, said: ‘Ms Blore is subject to an anti-social behaviour order which prohibits her from feeding or keeping cats.

‘Police offers and animal welfare officers attended her address on 4 May [2017] to see if she was contravening the order.

‘They went into the property and there was excrement from the cats in the living room.

‘An adult cat was found upstairs with one-month-old kittens.

Defending herself, Blore said: ‘The cat was a stray and the kittens were four weeks old.

‘They weren’t weaned and were too small to go in the garden.

‘They have taken the cats away now so I don’t have any cats.’

Sentencing:
Total fines and costs of £255.

Cricklewood, London: Paul Brown

CONVICTED (2015) | Paul Nigel Michael Brown, born 01/05/1961, previously of Walm Lane, Cricklewood, London NW2 3BU – failed to seek veterinary care for a dog found collapsed with unexplained horrific scalding injuries all over her head and body

Girlie was found with untreated scalding wounds caused by hot liquid being deliberately poured onto her head and body
Girlie’s skin was peeling off exposing infected wounds and raw flesh

Brown pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the female dog, Girlie, by failing to seek professional veterinary care for the wounds on her body.

The RSPCA were called to Brown’s property in February 2015 and found the pup, thought to be two years old, collapsed on a blanket in the garden with severe wounds and her skin “literally hanging off”.

She was so badly scalded on her face and body that she was given little chance of survival by vets.

Although there was insufficient evidence to prove that Brown had poured hot liquid on to the dog, the nature of the injuries indicated it had been done so deliberately.

Nicole Broster, an RSPCA inspector said: “I will never forget the shock I felt when I walked into the garden and found Girlie. I still cannot believe anyone could leave a dog in that condition.

“She had scalds covering at least a third of her body and large areas of her skin were simply peeling off, leaving infected wounds and pink skin underneath. She must have been in enormous pain and suffering terribly.

“She was very lethargic and depressed, and the vet confirmed she had collapsed due to clinical shock. I had to physically pick her up in my arms and carry her but as I did so her skin came away in my hands and stuck to my clothing. It was truly heartbreaking.”

Girlie was taken straight to a vet for treatment who told the RSPCA that the wounds “most likely originated from someone pouring or throwing hot water from a kettle or pan straight over her face and down her body.”

Brown said he was looking after Girlie for two weeks for a friend while they were undergoing house renovations. He did not contact the owners and ignored their efforts to contact him.

Girlie recovered in the RSPCA’s care and was rehomed. She must, however, must wear a t-shirt to protect her from sunburn.

Sentencing: 12-month community order involving 150 hours of unpaid work; ordered to pay £560. Banned from keeping animals for life.

Harlesden, North West London: Stephen Martyn

CONVICTED (2013) | Stephen Patrick Martyn, born 10 December 1973, of Chadwick Road, Harlesden, London NW10 – kicked his pet dog to death in a drunken rage.

Martyn, an alcoholic who’s originally from Dublin, told magistrates he could not remember attacking his Jack Russell terrier, Russ, in front of horrified onlookers on March 6, 2013.

Russ suffered two ruptures in the spleen and multiple tears in the liver from the attack, according to a post-mortem report.

The dog suffered in pain for at least 20 minutes before falling unconscious and later being found under a bush.

RSPCA inspector Mike Beaman said: “The kicking that this poor dog received was brutal. The fact that Mr Martyn was so drunk is not an excuse.”

He added: “When I picked up Russ’s body, blood poured from his mouth, such was the extent of his internal injuries. This dog suffered a slow and painful death.”

The court heard how Martyn had taken Russ out for a walk and had met friends who offered him a drink.

He drank four cans of alcohol, but does not remember walking home, kicking the dog or being arrested.
