Ide admitted two charges of causing unnecessary suffering to a terrier named Roxy and two of failing to take steps to protect her from pain, suffering, injury and disease.

He did so by using ‘physical violence, inappropriate handling and intimidator behaviour’.

Ide was investigated by the RSPCA after clips were handed to the animal welfare charity.

Cruel thug Andrew Ide from Havant, UK, was filmed kicking a dog, standing on her neck and throwing her to the ground.

Investigators said Ide had Roxy in his care when he was filmed ‘applying pressure through his foot’ standing on her nose, and then standing on her neck with his right foot.

An RSPCA spokeswoman said: ‘Further footage showed Ide carrying the small black dog by the scruff of her neck in his left hand while holding the muzzle area of the dog’s face with his right hand.

‘She then squeals as she is thrown onto the patio floor, and is whimpering as she lays on her front on the ground.

‘Another clip shows him use his right leg to kick Roxy’s face before walking away again.’

Roxy has since been found a new home having been signed over to the care of the RSPCA.

RSPCA Inspector Hannah Nixon said: ‘Causing unnecessary suffering to an animal is an offence under the Animal Welfare Act and the use of physical punishments has been shown to jeopardize the physical and mental health of dogs and cause suffering.’

Sentencing: 12-month community order with 250 hours of unpaid work and 16 rehabilitation activity days; total of £295 in costs and charges. Banned from owning animals for TWO years (expires March 2023).

The court heard Cook attacked the dog, who belonged to his former partner Paige Bowden, after returning home to find the dog had pooed and urinated inside.

Bronson was kicked with such force by Cook he suffered multiple injuries. He suffered a brain injury, internal bleeding, at least two broken bones, severe bruising around his left eye and even in his mouth.

When Ms Bowden came home and questioned Cook about the injuries, he said Bronson was ‘just sulking’ after being hurt by another dog owner on a walk.

Prosecuting for the RSPCA, Sarah Huck said Cook’s temper flared and he later threatened to stamp on the dog’s head to ‘finish him off so there was no vets’ bills to pay’.

An estimated £5,000 has so far been spent on treating Bronson after he was assessed by staff at Vets 4 Pets, Sanctuary Vets and the RSPCA-owned Stubbington Ark in Fareham.

Bronson is now recovering back in the care of Ms Bowden, who dumped Cook – the father of her young son – after the dog attack.

Mitigating, lawyer Howard Barrington-Clark said Cook ‘couldn’t cope’ when he found the mess and kicked out in anger as if the puppy was an ‘inanimate object’, like a ‘door’.

‘We have probably all done it, or come perilously close to doing it,’ he said.

‘It’s as if that puppy, for a split-second, turned into an inanimate object.

‘The defendant wasn’t thinking straight and accepts it was completely wrong – he accepts complete guilt.’

He said Cook’s previous criminal record was a ‘lousy’ one but contained no similar incidents.

Speaking after the sentencing, RSPCA inspector Charlotte Coggins said ‘justice has been done’ – but the case was among the ‘worst the group has seen in a long time’.

‘The injuries are absolutely awful,’ she said.

‘Thankfully [the dog] is recovering absolutely fine and he is back with his owner where, undoubtedly, he will be getting all the love he needs.’

Sentencing | 12-week prison sentence suspended for 18 months;100 hours of unpaid work; rehabilitation activity requirement comprising 21 sessions geared at reducing violent behaviour and 20 hours of activities. Total of £515 costs and charges. Disqualified from keeping animals for life.

Havant, Hampshire: Cheryl Welch

CONVICTED (2015) | Cheryl Welch, born 08/08/1978, of Purbrook Way, Havant PO9 3SG – failed to adequately groom her elderly shih tzu dog and treat her eye condition

Dog abuser Cheryl Welch from Havant, Hampshire, and victim Tam
Despite allowing her pet dog to get into this state Cheryl Welch was not disqualified from having animals and was allowed by magistrate Jennifer Duddridge to keep cats, birds and another dog …

Cheryl Welch admitted causing unnecessary suffering and failing to protect shih-tzu Tam from pain, suffering, injury and disease by failing to adequately groom her

The 10-year-old shih tzu could not see after her fur became so matted it damaged her eyes.

The court heard that Tam had been a rescue dog and Welch had taken her in.

But she was found by a member of the public and reported to the RSPCA after a freak near-miss when she ran out into the road and was nearly run over.

The driver was so shocked by the matted hair all over Tam that she called the RSPCA.

Portsmouth Magistrates’ Court heard how she was suffering from ‘poor husbandry’ with faeces and urine in her hair.

She was also suffering from dry eye, which had gone untreated for six months.

Sarah Wheadon, prosecuting for the RSPCA, said: ‘It certainly had been very uncomfortable for Tam and caused a significant degree of irritation.’

She added: ‘This was not a condition that could have gone on unnoticed by the owner.

‘It’s very severe and Tam was giving off a smell.’

Tam was signed over to the RSPCA but Welch was allowed to keep cats, birds and another dog.

Chair of the magistrates’ Jennifer Duddridge made the ruling as there was ‘no evidence of neglect of remaining animals and your children love their pets and they are important to them’.

Sentencing: community order with a 15-day rehabilitation activity requirement. Total of £160 costs and charges. No ban.
