RSPCA inspector Charlotte Coggins, who investigated the case, said: ‘This was a frustrating and saddening case where these two dogs were left without the care they desperately needed.

‘Sazzle was in a shocking condition when we first saw him with every bone showing. It was hard to believe he is a Staffordshire bull terrier crossed with a Labrador.

‘Veterinary examination found no medical reason for the weight loss and they increased in weight simply from being provided with an adequate diet.

‘It would have been obvious to anyone looking at both these dogs that they were desperately thin and in urgent need.

Duke admitted two charges of causing unnecessary suffering to the dog after she was seen struggling with blood coming from her injured paws.

The RSPCA were called on May 24, 2017, after Duke had been confronted by members of the public in Brockenhurst Road, Gosport.

Kitty Karna's paws had burned as she walked over the scorching pavement before she finally collapsed of heat exhaustion.

She subsequently collapsed, and despite initially recovering well, she was found to be suffering with kidney failure and had to be put to sleep.

RSPCA inspector Jenny Ride, who investigated the case, praised the strangers who stopped to help.

Jenny said: “Kitty had been walked excessively in extremely hot weather through the streets which caused her paws to bleed before she finally collapsed of heat exhaustion.

“Thankfully the kind people who saw her suffering rushed to her aid and took her to the vets where she was treated and deemed to be suffering.

“During hot weather, the RSPCA advise people to walk your dog in the morning or evening when it will not burn on the pavement or be at increased risk of heatstroke, and to be alert for signs of burned pads or other heat-related health issues.

“Dogs need exercise, even when it is hot, so walking your dog early in the morning or later in the evening can help mitigate risks associated with high temperatures.”

Sentencing: 80 hours of unpaid work; ordered to pay £50 court costs. Banned from keeping any animal for five years (expired September 2022).

Hopkins only received a three-year ban on keeping animals

Gosport, Hampshire: Janet Robinson

Police raided grandmother Robinson’s home after discovering chat logs on the now-jailed gang’s computers.

In court, a judge heard Robinson had a sick hoard of images, including a movie of bestiality with a girl aged between 12 and 13.

Robinson, who the court heard had been ‘shunned’ by the community since admitting her crimes last month, talked to men on Skype and Yahoo.

There was no suggestion she abused any children.

The court heard she made full admissions to police when arrested and told them she had performed a sex act with a dog before.

Judge Ian Pearson said: This was a sick fantasy of yours, you got your sexual gratification from the male with who you were discussing rather than the images.’

Hannah Duncan, for Robinson, said she had never been in trouble and had nausea from remorse. She added Robinson had lost her job, was told not to come back to a fitness group she attends and that a Facebook page had been set up highlighting her crimes.

Robinson pleaded guilty to 14 charges of possession of indecent images and one charge of possession of extreme pornography.

She had been charged with intercourse with a dog but pleaded not guilty and this was accepted by the court due to lack of evidence.

Sentence: 16-month suspended term for the child image offences and a four-month concurrent term for the bestiality –  suspended for two years. 50 days of rehabilitation activities; £350 costs. Robinson was put on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years. Banned from contact with children under 16 and from having a dog for 10 years (expires June 2026).
