Police officers, along with the RSPCA, Braintree District Council and vets secured a warrant to raid the home in Feering on April 9, 2021, following concerns that animals were being kept in vile conditions inside the property.

Once inside, officers found dogs and puppies and the pony, which were seized and taken into the care of the RSPCA.

A police spokesman said: “The dogs were being kept in a room which smelt strongly of urine and faeces and were stacked in small, heavily soiled crates which were barely big enough to stand or turn around in. Some of them were puppies in pairs making even less space for them in those inadequate crates.

“The pony was described by an independent vet as having ‘very poor body condition’ which ‘would have made it feel lethargic, cold and depressed’. “

It was previously reported that seven puppies were found dead and one dog had to be put down at the scene.

The RSPCA attended the location with the police and took Panda into their possession and then placed him into care where he is now doing well.

A vet who examined the footage said Panda’s body attitude when first seen on the video was one of fear with his ears back, tail between the legs and his back arched.

RSPCA inspector Jessica Dayes who investigated the incident said: “The footage was extremely concerning. The dog appeared in the video fearful and the vet report stated this was an unacceptable way to discipline or train a dog and would have caused unnecessary suffering.”

Sentencing:
Cassell – 18-month community order with 25 rehabilitation days and an eight-week curfew. Ordered to pay £695. Disqualified from keeping dogs for three years.

Backyard breeder Nash – 30 rehabilitation days and 150 hours of unpaid work; £695 in costs and charges. Disqualified from keeping dogs for three years.

Braintree, Essex: Fiona Hume

CONVICTED (2016) | Fiona Jane Hume, born 10/06/1988, of Inworth Road, Feering, Braintree CO5 9SE – left five horses to starve at DIY livery yard

Horse abuser Fiona Hume
Mother-of-one Fiona Hume was given a five-year ban from keeping horses after some were found starved at makeshift stables

Hume failed to feed her horses properly, leaving them so weak, skinny and starving that one was barely able to stand.

RSPCA officers who brought the prosecution against Hume have expressed shock at the way the five animals had been left to starve at a DIY livery yard in Inworth.

Ten-year-old grey Shetland Misty, 18-year-old bay Shetland Chocolate, six-year-old liver chestnut thoroughbred Zebedee, 20-year-old bay thoroughbred Keira and 22-year-old palomino Arab Charlie were all signed over to the RSPCA.

RSPCA inspector Caroline Richardson said: “We were called to the yard in April this year on an entirely separate matter when we came across these horses and ponies.

“Three were given body condition scores of zero out of five, while two were rated as 0.5 out of five.

“They were so skinny. One of the ponies could barely stand, she was absolutely skeletal.

“I couldn’t speak when I saw them because it was so bad, I was totally shocked.”

Inspector Richardson added: “As well as their awful condition, four of the horses had worms and two had skin problems caused by untreated lice.

“To let these horses get into such a shocking state is inexcusable and I hope that they will now go on to live out their days in wonderful, loving homes – with lots of grass to eat and hay to munch.”

Sentence: eight-week jail term, suspended for one year; 80 hours of unpaid work; total of £380 costs and charges. Banned from keeping horses and ponies for five years (expired November 2021)

Witham, Essex: Chernice Merton

CONVICTED (2015) | Chernice Louise Merton, who also uses the surnames Pursey and Leslie, born 11 May 1989, of Bramble Road*, Witham CM8 2GX – starved her pet dog to death.

Chernice Merton.
Dog killer Merton, a married mother-of-two, is also known as Chernice Pursey or Chernice Leslie.

Merton admitted failing to provide an appropriate diet and veterinary treatment for her dog, a two-year-old Jack Russell terrier cross called Bubbles, who was found emaciated and dead in her owner’s care.

The RSPCA was called in December 2014 after Bubbles’ emaciated body was taken to a vet. The vet found that she had been starved to death.

RSPCA inspector Sarah Elmy said: “This poor dog was completely skin and bones and the post mortem revealed she had starved to death.

“She had no remaining internal fat and her gastro-intestinal tract was empty except for a plastic sweet wrapper, which suggests she had been so hungry she had been forced to scavenge rubbish.

“There were no pre-existing abnormalities which could have explained this weight loss.

“Vet records also revealed that Bubbles weighed less when she was brought in at two years of age, than she had at ten weeks, when she was brought in for her second injections.

“It is hard to fathom how anyone could just leave an animal to suffer in this way. Bubbles must have experienced extreme suffering to have died in this sad way.”

Sentence: 100 hours’ unpaid work, £800 costs and £60 victim surcharge. Disqualified from keeping all animals for life
