Steven ‘Steb’ Carr carried out the attack on Patterdale terrier Max, punching the defenceless animal in the face and body.

The cowardly attack happened in Edinburgh Road in the town on Friday, July 10, 2020.

Carr had denied a charge of causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal under the Animal Welfare Act 2006 but was found guilty after a trial.

Carr, who had admitted a further charge of being drunk and disorderly in a public place, saw Max officially ordered to be taken out of his ownership by magistrates.

Sentencing: 18 weeks in prison. £128 victim surcharge. Deprivation order on Max, but no ban was imposed by the court.
