CONVICTED (2022) | Gemma Ruth Slinger, born December 1973, of 3 Westside Cottages, North Road, Torworth, Retford DN22 8NT – neglected pigs on her smallholding.
Slinger, who is a company director and owner of the Cuckoo Café in East Retford, pleaded guilty to a number of welfare and animal by-product offences.
Officers from the county council’s trading standards division found goat and pig carcasses on her land that had rotted and decomposed to the bone, while malnourished pigs rooted around for food.
There was no feed nor water available for the animals and officers also found chickens roaming the grounds freely, exposed to the risk of catching bird flu, despite national measures requiring poultry to be housed.
Sentencing | fined £350. Banned from owning farmed livestock for 10 years.

Awful to learn of this. The cafe premises were leased, not owned. These prime canalside/ edge of park premises will be coming up for rent in the future.
Got off to lightly in my opinion. How could you Gemma. You used to love your animals and fields. So disappointed. You should be ashamed. Why not just surrender them for rescue. The poor suffering those animals have gone through.
I’ve been trying to get action against her for the last 7 year . Absolutely disgusting conditions for the animals..RSPCA didn’t take any action after I reported it several times…I would of also liked a custodial sentence….Enter the Cuckoo cafe with caution
This has to stop. The RSPCA needs more teeth to act faster in these cases. I agree with custodial sentences when cruelty on this scale is proven. I’ve never been in the Cuckoo Cafe and never will.

Totally shocked and disgusted. We were planning on visiting after seeing the posts on FB of the food. How the HELL can the sentence be that light ? It’s a total failure of the system and a failure of those poor animals. I’d rather walk over hot coals than set foot in The Cookoo Cafe now 😡 Shame on you Gemma 😡
I am so upset and disappointed, been a regular customer of The Cuckoo Cafe for a while, food always very good, but won’t be going in again.
