Buxton, Derbyshire: Janet and Anthony Melland

CONVICTED (2016) Janet Melland, born 9 February 1947, and son Anthony Melland, born 1 December 1970, of Beechcroft Cottage, Flagg, Buxton SK17 9QE – kept horses and dogs in conditions of filth and squalor.

The Mellands were hit with the lifetime disqualification after five horses were left in two dirty and humid shipping containers on their farm for at least 22 hours a day.

Anthony Melland pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a miniature Shetland pony called Robin. He also admitted failing to provide five equines, Robin, Alana, Vienna, Kiara and Victor, with a suitable environment.

Janet Melland pleaded guilty to failing to provide three dogs, Spot, Mini and Ruby, with a suitable environment.

Prosecutor Kevin Worthington said an RSPCA inspector and a vet visited the Mellands’ Greatlow Farm on Ashbourne Road, Flagg, on February 10, 2016, and found two ‘large shipping containers’.

Inside one were two Shetland ponies including Robin who was in a ‘very poor body condition’ and had ‘nasal discharge’.

Shetlands Robin and Allana were discovered in a humid and stinking plastic container that once formed the body of a van.

Another container, housing mares and a foal with overgrown hooves, was covered with faeces and had poor ventilation.

The containers were dark and damp with no clean bedding and nowhere dry for the ponies to lie down.

The inspector and vet then went inside the Mellands’ home and found three dogs in a ‘filthy, dirty’ area covered with faeces.

RSPCA inspector Heather Morris, who investigated the case, said: “When we visited the farm in February, we found two Shetland ponies, Robin and Alana, being kept in a plastic shipping container which was extremely humid inside and with no fresh air.

“It was very small, there was no hay and the water was dirty. Additionally, the floor of the container was absolutely soaking and Robin was very skinny.

“We also found two adult cob horses and a cob foal – Vienna, Kiara and Victor – in a metal shipping container. “The conditions in this container were just as horrific.

“In interview, it was admitted that the horses were shut away in the containers for at least 22 hours a day.

“On top of that, we also found three dogs – a Jack Russell, a poodle-type and a border terrier – living in an outhouse, covered in faeces and with no clean water. “It was absolutely appalling that the animals were shut away in these horrific conditions.

“The containers were humid and absolutely stunk. For them to be locked away for that period of time with no fresh air is absolutely horrendous.”

Allana found a new home through World Horse Welfare’s rehoming scheme, while Victor, Vienna and Kiara were still with the charity undergoing rehabilitation.

Robin had to be put down after a few weeks at Penny Farm as he failed to respond to treatment for dental problems and a sinus infection.

The three dogs — Spot, Mini and Ruby — were rehomed by the RSPCA.

Inspector Morris added: “We worked together with World Horse Welfare, Derbyshire police and the local trading standards in this case and we are very grateful for their help.”

Sentencing |
Anthony Melland: six-week prison sentence suspended for 12 months, 150 hours of unpaid work, £400 costs.
Janet Melland: 16-week curfew, £400 costs.
Both banned from keeping horses for life.

Additional Information

In September 2021 Anthony Melland was stung by a paedophile hunting group for the third time for online sexual grooming of a child.

When the group turned up at Melland’s farm to confront him with their evidence, they caught him in his van masturbating while chatting to a child on the internet.

The group said that Melland had discussed bestiality with their decoy and the possibility of involving a child in that kind of depraved activity.

The group described Melland as “a very dangerous man” and warned parents to check their children’s devices for the name ‘Smith Mark’.

During a previous visit to Melland’s farm by paedophile hunting group Predator Exposure in February 2019 several dogs were found apparently living in squalid conditions. The group reported the matter to the RSPCA but it’s unknown if Melland ever faced further prosecution for animal cruelty.

Gosport, Hampshire: Janet Robinson

CONVICTED (2016) | Janet Robinson, born 8 November 1966, of Prideaux-Brune Avenue, Gosport PO13 0UE- kept a sick hoard of child abuse and bestiality images and shared twisted fantasies with a paedophile rape gang

Police raided grandmother Robinson’s home after discovering chat logs on the now-jailed gang’s computers.

In court, a judge heard Robinson had a sick hoard of images, including a movie of bestiality with a girl aged between 12 and 13.

Robinson, who the court heard had been ‘shunned’ by the community since admitting her crimes last month, talked to men on Skype and Yahoo.

There was no suggestion she abused any children.

The court heard she made full admissions to police when arrested and told them she had performed a sex act with a dog before.

Judge Ian Pearson said: This was a sick fantasy of yours, you got your sexual gratification from the male with who you were discussing rather than the images.’

Hannah Duncan, for Robinson, said she had never been in trouble and had nausea from remorse. She added Robinson had lost her job, was told not to come back to a fitness group she attends and that a Facebook page had been set up highlighting her crimes.

Robinson pleaded guilty to 14 charges of possession of indecent images and one charge of possession of extreme pornography.

She had been charged with intercourse with a dog but pleaded not guilty and this was accepted by the court due to lack of evidence.

Sentence: 16-month suspended term for the child image offences and a four-month concurrent term for the bestiality –  suspended for two years. 50 days of rehabilitation activities; £350 costs. Robinson was put on the sex offenders’ register for 10 years. Banned from contact with children under 16 and from having a dog for 10 years (expires June 2026).

Whitehaven, Cumbria: George Litt

CONVICTED (2016) | George W Litt, born c. 1954, of 1A Birley Court, Whitehaven CA28 7NF – attempted to have sex with a dog

Litt pleaded not guilty to all three charges he faced: having sex with the dog, attempting to do so; and causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

He was convicted of the attempt offence but cleared of the other charges.

The trial heard that Litt accepted that he intended to have sex with the Boston terrier in a St Bees caravan – claiming to be drunk and sexually frustrated – but claimed to have changed his mind prior to the act.

It was at the point, he claimed, that his partner at the time – the dog’s owner – and a friend returned to the caravan.

The court heard that Litt had been drinking in the St Bees caravan with his partner on the afternoon of August 18, 2015.

Around 7.30pm, the pair were joined by a friend, and the partner and the friend left the caravan briefly to collect some chairs from elsewhere on the site.

When they returned, they made the shocking discovery which caused the partner to run from the caravan screaming and the friend to vomit.

Sentencing: 100-day prison term, suspended for 12 months; 35-day rehabilitation course; £580 costs and charges. Banned from owning an animal, and banned from having unsupervised contact with an animal, for 12 months. He must also sign the Sex Offenders’ Register.

Leslie, Fife: Brandon Robb

CONVICTED (2014) | serial animal killer Brandon Robb (aka Brandon Lee), born c. 1997 of Paterson Cottages, Leslie, Glenrothes KY7 3DZ – used his pet dog to hunt and kill a rare deer

Robb killed the exceptionally rare piebald deer while awaiting sentence for stealing 30 ducks from Meikle Balquhomrie Farm, Leslie, with friend Benjamin ‘Benny’ Murray.

The deer have a distinctive brown and white coat and are thought to make up less than 1% of the white-tailed deer population.

In court, it was revealed Sheriff Max Hendry had received a social work report that stated Robb was “effectively living a feral existence”.

He had plastered his own Facebook page with photos of him posing next to illegally slain animals, including the stolen ducks and the dead deer.

Robb and accomplice Murray admitted stealing 30 ducks from between July 29 and August 1, 2013.

Robb was found out after being caught on film when gamekeeper Mark Robson planted an infrared camera to catch the thieves.

Depute fiscal Lauri Mitchell said: “The birds were checked daily and on July 29 there were approximately 30 injured or missing.

“Witness Robson, who owns the farm, checked Brandon Robb’s Facebook page and saw a number of images of dead ducks and contacted the police.

“The Facebook messages indicated the accused Murray had also been present at the time.”

Robb also pleaded guilty to using a lurcher-type dog to hunt and kill a piebald deer at Ballingall Farm, Leslie, when he did not have the legal right to take or kill deer, on March 16 and 17, 2014.

He also admitted that between January 1 and March 17, 2014, at the same farm, he hunted deer with dogs, as well as assaulting a man on February 19, 2014, and four bail breaches.

Hours before one court appearance Robb ranted on Facebook about “grasses” and vowed to continue killing, writing: “Born a hunter, I’ll die a hunter. F*** THE BAN.”

Robb also admitted shouting racist abuse and hitting a man with a
golf club.

Robb was given eight months’ detention in the care of the local authority, while accomplice Benjamin Murray was sentenced to 13 months in prison.

Accomplice Benny Murray, who went on to be jailed for four years in 2016 after being convicted of further animal cruelty as well as serial domestic violence towards different partners

He told Murray: “Your behaviour was, in short, atrocious. Your behaviour in the duck case was barbaric.”

Turning to Robb he said: “Although you are only 17 you cannot expect to continue to break the law and avoid the consequences of that.”

Update May 2014

Robb was back in court in May 2014 after threatening to beat up a 14-year-old boy. This was a breach of his bail conditions which banned him from having any contact with children.

Update July 2014

Robb returned to court yet again in July 2014 to face charges relating to the carrying out of sexual offences in the presence of two children.

It was alleged that on July 5, 2013, at an address in Fife, Robb repeatedly uttered remarks of a sexual nature to a girl who had not reached the age of 13.

He was also charged with exposing his genitals in a sexual manner to the same girl by lowering his trousers and exposing himself in her presence.

Furthermore, he intentionally engaged in a sexual activity in the presence of the girl by repeatedly simulating a sex act.

Robb faced a further charge that, on August 7 2013 at an address in Fife, he intentionally engaged in sexual activity in the presence of a boy who was under 13, by exposing himself and performing a sex act.

Robb was granted bail and due to return to court for trial in October 2014; however, the outcome was not reported.

Update August/September 2020

In August 2020 Fife Police issued an appeal for information as they launched a hunt for “urban hunter” Brandon Robb, and warned the public not to approach him.

It was reported that Robb is known to frequent parks, wooded areas and farmland in the area, and has connections in Glenrothes.

In response to the appeal, Brandon Robb posted on Facebook that he was “not missing” but had gone fishing and was in Bishop Auckland, County Durham

He was soon apprehended and summoned back to court in September 2020 in relation to four breaches of a sexual offences prevention order imposed on him in March 2016. He admitted those offences when he appeared via video link at Kirkcaldy Sheriff Court.

Under the terms of the order, Robb, of Paterson Park Cottages, was forbidden from contacting any child under the age of 16 but the court heard he had ignored that by having contact with two 14-year-olds and two 15-year-olds on various occasions in the Leslie area between March 1 and 3 last year and between June 1 and July 31 this year.

Fiscal Ronnie Hay explained Robb had regularly met up with people – some of whom were under the age of 16 – in the grounds of Leslie House, local parks and woodland and at a nearby reservoir.

Mr Hay also revealed how he had been messaging a girl under the age of 16 on social media channel Snapchat, in particular sending pictures of his stomach muscles.

Defence solicitor David Cranston explained as Leslie was a small community, it was common for children of different age groups to grow up together, with large groups of around 20 people tending to congregate in certain areas.

He said: “The context is that everybody is quite well known to each other in Leslie, but he recognises that he shouldn’t have been as friendly with the under 16s.”

Mr Cranston went on to say Robb was aware the police were looking for him and arranged to hand himself in on August 11.

However, Sheriff James Williamson was not impressed by the manner in which Robb had breached the order imposed by the court.

He said: “The phrase has been used that you came into contact with children.

“That would give an indication of innocent contact but it’s clear that you went out of your way to make contact with young people quite contrary to the sexual offences prevention order.”

Sheriff Williamson sentenced Robb to 28 months in prison, backdated to August 3, 2020.

Robb previously gained notoriety when he posted pictures of himself and his dog hunting, and was jailed in 2014 after using his pet dog to hunt and kill a rare piebald deer.

Making reference to that, Mr Cranston told the court his client had “quite severe” ADHD but loved hunting and enjoyed “ridding the local golf course of pests”.

Moston/Harpurhey, Manchester: Adeline and Chris Stopher

CONVICTED (2013) | Adeline Anne Stopher, born 27/08/1962, of Attleboro Road, Moston, Manchester M40 5EN, and son Chris James Stopher, born 12/04/1988, of Church Lane, Harpurhey, Manchester M9 4HZ – watched their German shepherd slowly starve to death

Dog killers: Adeline and Chris Stopher from Manchester, UK
Adeline and Chris Stopher were both jailed after letting ther pet dog starve to death

Chris Stopher and his mother Adeline Stopher, who at the time lived together in Burnthorp Avenue, Blackley, were convicted in their absence of causing unnecessary suffering to the six-year-old female dog, known as Wilson.

The offence came to light when a driver for Manchester Dogs’ Home called at the house to pick up the dog for cremation. He was so appalled at the dog’s ‘totally emaciated’ condition he called in the RSPCA.

Animal welfare officers investigated the case and the Stophers were arrested.

Veterinary examination showed Wilson was less than half her normal weight and was so hungry before her death she had started to eat cloth. She also had a large tumour in her chest. Experts said she may have suffered for six weeks or longer before finally dying.

David McCormick, prosecuting, told the court: “Both accepted responsibilities for the dog and said it had died slowly of hunger.

“They agreed they should have taken it to the vet but made no effort to do so.

“Mr Stopher said he had no money on his phone. Mrs Stopher indicated she preferred the dog to die at home, rather than be put down by a veterinary surgeon.”

Mr McCormick said: “The cloth in its gastro-intestinal tract suggested it was ingesting foreign materials to satisfy its hunger”,.

No explanation was given as to why they hadn’t fed Wilson for several weeks.

Mr McCormick said: “They knew of the dog’s deterioration and did nothing.”

Jailing the pair, court chairman Wallace Johnson said: “Reports show you both have mental health factors but they were not linked to the offending behaviour.

“This dog died a slow death as a result of your neglect.”

Alexandra Patison, defending, said the pair had ‘very troubled’ backgrounds and were deeply sorry for what happened.

She said: “What they did wasn’t out of malice; it was a lack of understanding. They have a tendency to try and deal with things themselves when they need help.”

Sentencing: six months in jail. Banned from keeping animals for 10 years (expired January 2023).

Update August 2019

Chris Stopher was given a suspended prison sentence after sending indecent messages to an underage schoolgirl. He was ordered to undertake 120 hours of unpaid work, participate in a sex offender programme and 25 days of rehabilitation activities.

Redcar, North Yorkshire: Daniel Tate

CONVICTED (2008) | dog-fighting ring member Daniel Tate, born 6 December 1987, previously of Cresswell Road, Grangetown, Middlesbrough but at the time of conviction of George Street, Redcar TS10 2BN – set his illegal pit bull terrier on a smaller dog in a vicious “training session”.

Daniel Tate: dog fighter, pervert, lifelong loser.

Twisted Daniel Tate, also a registered sex offender, was sentenced to five months at a young offenders’ institution and banned from keeping animals for ten years after he pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a dog and owning a banned animal.

Mobile phone footage of the fight was handed to Cleveland Police, who asked the RSPCA to investigate the case.

The court heard that Tate’s pit bull terrier-type dog, Chico, was filmed fighting a Staffordshire bull terrier-type dog that RSPCA inspectors believe had been stolen for the illegal confrontation.

John Ellwood, prosecuting for the RSPCA, said Tate had helped set up the fight between his pit bull Chico and a Staffordshire Bull Terrier in an alley at the back of King Street, South Bank, on January 7, 2007.

He said: “This case is presented on the basis that this was an arranged training session for the pit bull to teach it that it can fight and win.

“It’s fairly obvious there can only be one winner in this fight and that was the case. The pit bull quite quickly got the better of the Staffordshire.”

Still from the horrific footage showing an illegal pitbull being set on a small Staffy who is believed to have been stolen for baiting.

The short film showed the dogs being baited and encouraged to fight, with Tate’s dog viciously attacking the other animal.

Despite the efforts to trace the Staffordshire bull terrier the inspectors were unable to trace the attacked dog and have not been able to determine whether the animal was seriously injured or even killed.

Mr Ellwood said an onlooker to the baiting session had recorded the fight on a mobile phone and had forwarded the images to other people. One of those people had taken it to the police and officers recognised both Tate and his pit bull as being from the Grangetown area, the court heard yesterday.

Mr Ellwood said officers raided Tate’s former home in Cresswell Road where they found him hiding in a bathroom cupboard.

Daniel Tate was allowed to own animals again from 2018.

When a vet examined the pit bull in April 2007 – months after the fight was caught on camera – fresh wounds consistent with another fighting dog were found, said Mr Ellwood.

Tate pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to an animal by causing it to fight and being in possession of an illegal dog.

He also admitted failure to comply with his notification requirements as a registered sex offender after he received an 18 month community order for a conviction in March, 2007.

Inspector Alan Fisher, of the RSPCA’s special operations Unit, investigated the dog fight.

Speaking after the hearing, he said: “I’m very pleased the court viewed this matter so seriously and passed their sentence accordingly.

“Dog-fighting is an appalling and cruel practice.

“Animals are forced together in artificial circumstances and caused pain and suffering.

“The RSPCA will continue its efforts to stamp out this vile practice, and assistance from the public in reporting these matters is gratefully appreciated and welcome.”

The video footage led to Cleveland Police and the RSPCA carrying out a crackdown on illegal fighting dogs in the east Cleveland area, which saw seven suspected members of a dog-fighting ring arrested in March 2007.

The raids, which were the culmination of a ten-month surveillance operation, saw four heavily- built pit bull terrier-type dogs led into restraint cages by RSPCA officers.

Operation Bale is believed to have smashed a gang suspected of using dangerous dogs for social status and organising spectator battles in alley-gated arenas near homes.

Sentencing: Five months at a young offenders’ institution. Banned from keeping animals for ten years (expired 2018).
