During the trial, the jury heard that the RSPCA was contacted by a vet after the puppy, known as Rocko, was taken in dead on arrival on February 2, 2022.

The puppy, who had died 12 hours earlier, was taken to a vet with multiple non-accidental injuries

A post-mortem examination showed a number of non-accidental injuries including cigarette burns, head trauma and an eyeball prolapsed from the socket.

Rocko had been seen at the vet three days before for his vaccinations and was reported to be bright, alert and responsive.

In a statement read in court, RSPCA inspector Emma Dingley said: “The vet received the post-mortem results back and immediately contacted the RSPCA. He told me on the phone it was the worst post-mortem examination report he had ever read.”

Inspector Dingley contacted Payne, who confirmed he had owned Rocko for six days and bought him from a breeder named George Wilson.

When interviewed by inspector Dingley, Payne answered no comment to all questions.

A vet who gave evidence in court said Rocko’s injuries suggested “intentional harm”.

Cigarette burns were found on the puppy’s groin

The puppy had a ruptured liver, head trauma, a partial hip fracture and abrasions consistent with being scratched by fingernails.

He also had cigarette burns to his groin area and injuries to his abdomen, and lacerations to his liver and had inhaled the contents of his stomach.

Rocko’s heart also showed signs of having a massive rush of adrenaline before he died, showing the pup was terrified.

When the vet saw the results of the post mortem, he made a report to the RSPCA, and Payne was charged with causing unnecessary suffering to an animal.

In a statement read in court at the trial, RSPCA inspector Emma Dingley said: ‘The vet received the postmortem results back and immediately contacted the RSPCA.

‘He told me on the phone it was the worst postmortem examination report he had ever read.’

Payne denied the offence, claiming Rocko was in poor health when he collected him from Mr Wilson, and needed ‘a bit of love’.

Payne’s defence said in court that Rocko’s injuries were caused by his owner while he was trying to do CPR on him, however this was disproved in court by the vet giving evidence.

The court heard that further enquiries were made with George Wilson, who confirmed he sold the puppy to Payne, adding that he was the biggest of the litter and very healthy when he left.

According to Wilson, Payne told him he had left the puppy alone with his five-year-old son while he went to the shop and thought the child must have injured the puppy.

Handing down a custodial sentencing of two years and nine months, the Honorary Recorder of Preston, Judge Robert Altham, said: ‘The only conclusion I can draw is that you tortured that dog to death. He must have died in agony and terror.

‘You have shown no remorse. I am driven to the appalling conclusion you did it to him because you enjoyed it.’

Speaking after the hearing, inspector Dingley said: ‘I will never be able to comprehend what happened to Rocko and why such a young animal was treated in such a cruel way.

‘This investigation will stay with me forever, but I’m pleased that we were able to get some justice for this little puppy, and I think the long custodial sentence reflects the gravity of this case.’

Beeston, Leeds: Luke Ward

CONVICTED (2023) | Luke Keith Ward, born 13 November 1985, of Upper Woodview Terrace, Beeston, Leeds LS11 6JZ – stabbed and slashed horses in a field and tried to strangle one of them.

Sadistic Ward’s vicious attack on the defenceless horses took place at a farm off Hall Lane in Farnley, Leeds, around July 15, 2022,

Ward attacked one pony and three horses in total.

One was found with slash wounds across her throat and had also been stabbed in the neck. An elderly pony had a shoelace tied around his neck in an apparent strangulation attempt.

The injuries included deep cuts and slashes to the neck and face. The horses were left covered in blood and scarred.

A blood-stained knife with an 8-inch blade was found at the scene and forensic analysis found Ward’s DNA on it.

When Ward, who had lived opposite the farm at the time of the incident, was interviewed about the offences, he initially denied being involved.

He was subsequently charged with four offences of causing unnecessary suffering to an animal and pleaded guilty during an earlier court appearance.

Judge Simon Phillips KC, sitting at Leeds Crown Court, described Ward’s actions as ‘sadistic’ and said they had caused distress to the animals and their owners.

He said the owners had also faced vets bills running into hundreds of pounds.

The horse yard had increased security and had installed a £1,000 CCTV system.

PC Rachel Harrison, of Leeds West Patrol Team 3, who investigated the offences, said: “Ward targeted these defenceless animals and caused serious injuries to them which left them in significant pain and distress.

“He has not explained his actions and we can only assume that he derived some sense of satisfaction from inflicting these injuries on them. As well as the pain and distress caused to the horses, these incidents also caused upset to the owners and understandable concern in the local community.

“When he was interviewed, Ward denied the offences and said that he had grown up with horses and would never hurt any animal, but the forensic evidence linked him to the scene and resulted in his guilty pleas.

“We hope it will provide some reassurance to the victims and to the wider community to know that he has now had to answer for his actions.”

Sentencing | 45 months in prison. Banned from keeping or owning any animal for life.

Upperby / Harraby, City of Carlisle: Nicola Bradley and Tracy Dixon

CONVICTED (2023) | Nicola Bradley, born c. 1988, of Welsh Road, Upperby, Carlisle CA1 3AU and Tracy Dixon, born c. 1976, of Warnell Drive, Harraby, Carlisle CA1 3LR – sadistically tortured and killed a friend’s African grey parrot.

Friends Bradley and Dixon were collected from a night out by Paul Crooks, who took the women to his home at around 5.30am on July 30, 2022.

As the women carried on drinking, Mr Crooks went to bed. He woke at 8.30am to find his guests had messed around with shaving foam which had gone over the cage of the parrot, Sparky.

This was cleaned and, as he left his house to go shopping, he told the women to leave the bird alone.

But on returning home Mr Crooks found the women wearing his clothing with Sparky unresponsive and unrecognisable, her head hanging limply out of a cage.

After confronting the pair, he learned the parrot had been covered with Mr Muscle, Brasso, furniture polish, daubed in gloss paint, and also hit with a tea towel.

Attempts were also made to feed Sparky to Mr Crooks’ dog before the parrot was dumped into a tumble drier which was switched on.

Mr Crooks was told that Bradley had snapped Sparky’s neck with Dixon reporting the bird to be “gasping” when pulled from the drier.

But after police were alerted and the women were interviewed, they sought to blame each other for the shocking cruelty.

The women went on trial in July 2023 having denied causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal but were found guilty by magistrates.

Mr Crooks had told the court that singing Sparky was a big hit with his friends, and used to belt out the national anthem plus theme tunes from Coronation Street and Emmerdale.

Netherfield, Nottingham: Reegan Smith

CONVICTED (2023) | Reegan Smith, born 3 December 2004, of Dunstan Street, Netherfield, Nottingham but with links to the Gedling* and Sherwood areas of the city – kicked and hit a helpless pigeon with a tray while three women cheered him on.

Smith attacked the defenceless bird in a bike shed area off Winchester Street, Sherwood, on the evening of October 18, 2022.

The RSPCA was sent copies of three CCTV video clips taken of the cruel behaviour, which showed he was seemingly encouraged by three female onlookers.

RSPCA Chief Inspector Rebecca Lowe said: “The video clips show sickening violence being inflicted on the poor pigeon, involving not only the perpetrator but three female onlookers who seemed to be egging him on.

Nottingham thug Reegan Smith was filmed torturing a helpless pigeon while the three females pictured egged him on

“When we spoke to the person who had sent the CCTV footage to us, they told us that they had found the injured pigeon and moved it to a place of safety. We provided the clips to a local vet who reviewed the footage and he confirmed that trauma had been inflicted on the pigeon.”

The vet reported that the videos showed a “young male inflicting repeated trauma to the pigeon by kicking [it] numerous times”.

He continued: “It is self-evident that the male’s foot makes contact with the bird, and… the bird jumps and flutters and tries to escape from the male.

“It is clear that this young male knows what he is doing as he re-approaches the bird to see what the bird is doing …. It is evident that this young man is playing to an audience and he is being egged on.

“The young females appear to be filming the incident with no effort to prevent the man from inflicting any further punishment on this bird. He attempts to inflict further damage and pain to the bird, he used a further object (tray) to hit at the bird. In addition the young man appears to throw a small object towards the bird.

Smith pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to the pigeon and given a suspended sentence and short ban on keeping animals.

Sentencing | four-month suspended prison sentence; costs of £300 and a victim surcharge of £154; 15 days of rehabilitation. Three-year ban on keeping animals (expires August 2026).

Netherley, Liverpool: Lewis Hudson

CONVICTED (2023) | Lewis Hudson, born 9 June 2000, of Crispin Road, Netherley, Liverpool L27 7BE – tortured his girlfriend’s kitten over eight months by shooting her, scalding her in the shower and covering her in bleach before beating her to death.

Evil Lewis Hudson from Liverpool, UK was jailed and banned for life from keeping animals after subjecting a kitten to numerous sadistic attacks
Lewis Hudson shot a kitten with a BB gun, stamped on her with steel toe cap boots and covered her in bleach. He even hit her with a shovel.

During an eight-month campaign of terror, Lewis Hudson subjected the kitten, known as Binx to multiple sadistic attacks, culminating in her horrific death in August 2022.

The appalling catalogue of abuse began not long after Hudson had moved into a flat in Prescot with his now ex partner, Summer – who owned Binx – in August 2021.

In the months that followed Summer noticed several injuries on the cat. Hudson initially denied all knowledge, but soon began openly abusing Binx.

On one occasion he punched the kitten after she had scratched the furniture.

He also left her in the shower with the water running for long periods of time. Her owner found the distressed animal in the the bathroom, which was full of steam. She was crying and panting and her skin was hot to the touch.

In June 2022, Summer was watching funny cat videos on her phone when Hudson told her he had a funny video to show her. He then showed her a video of him stamping on Binx in steel toe cap boots. The cat was screaming and Hudson told her he would continue to do so if she did not do as she was told.

On another occasion Summer found Binx lying motionless and matted with blood in the bath after she had been hit with a shovel in the shower. This had been done with such force, the young animal’s teeth had been broken

Hudson would also shoot the cat with pellets from his BB gun. He even soaked them in cleaning fluids before firing them – and also hit Binx with a mop soaked in bleach “in the hope it would kill her”.

Summer tried to make arrangements for the cat to be rehomed but Hudson refused to allow this because he feared the injuries would be traced back to him and he wanted a dog.

In a disturbing series of text messages sent in August 2022, Hudson told his then partner that the cat was “going to get it” and he was “going to whack her with this shovel”.

He then told her “if you don’t get home now I am going to kill it”.

He finished by telling Summer “everyone in your family thinks I am a soft c because I am polite and quiet to them. I’ll f**** show them the real me if they want.”

She returned home to find Binx lying motionless. Her fur was matted with blood where she had been hit with the shower head.

Her fangs had been cleanly hit out of her mouth due to the force. Summer passed out when she saw the cat’s injuries while her mum called the police.

Hudson was arrested at the scene. When questioned by the police, Hudson claimed he “was all talk” and had kicked the cat away from him causing her to hit the TV stand.

In his witness statement RSPCA Inspector Anthony Joynes, who investigated for the charity, said: “Binx was wrapped in a bag, covered with a towel and contained within a cardboard box. I saw she had a number of fresh looking wounds around her nasal area and chin. I noted there were no obvious signs that might suggest Binx had been involved in a road traffic accident and her claws did not appear scuffed.

“The inside of her mouth was bloodied and I noted that both upper canines were broken. When handling Binx I noted a crisp packet type sound coming from the chest area which can be a sign of subcutaneous emphysema and indicative of chest trauma.”

Inspector Joynes arranged a post mortem examination. It showed that Binx’s body was covered with abrasions and bruises.

Binx endured months of torture by Liverpool man Lewis Hudson, before he finally killed her

Her ribs were fractured and her lung was punctured, which was confirmed to be the cause of death. The court heard the cat had “suffered extensively”.

“Faeces and blood were reportedly seen in multiple areas of the premises, indicative that the cat was injured and mobile for a period of time immediately prior to death,” said a report by an independent veterinary expert.

“The most likely cause of death in this animal, otherwise healthy, was a traumatic and non- accidental pneumothorax. It is clear that the animal suffered multiple, different, blunt traumas and that the animal was conscious when this occurred.

“Furthermore, the healing fractured rib and the “aged” bleeding, support the existence of a previous traumatic event to the chest, many days ahead of the fatal set of injuries listed above.”

Evil Lewis Hudson from Liverpool, UK was jailed and banned for life from keeping animals after subjecting a kitten to numerous sadistic attacks

In mitigation, the court heard Hudson had experienced “traumatic events in his childhood”. He was supported by his dad in court and it is understood that his mother bakery owner Lisa Hudson and grandmother Marion Hudson are also standing by him..

Honour Judge Brian Cummings KC called the criminality “a sickening catalogue of cruelty to a defenceless animal”. He noted the totality of the offending and the prolonged and “sadistic” nature of the torture. In mitigation he took into account Hudson’s guilty pleas to two counts of animal cruelty and one of harassment relating to the text messages to Summer.

Judge Cummings jailed Hudson for two years and three months. He also imposed a restraining order that stops him contacting Summer for 10 years, as well as disqualifying him from keeping any animal for life.

Binx endured months of torture by Liverpool man Lewis Hudson, before he finally killed her

Speaking after the sentencing hearing, inspector Joynes said: “This case involved stomach-churning and sadistic levels of cruelty over a prolonged period.

“The extreme suffering Binx endured at the hands of Hudson was used to hurt and punish Binx’s owner – who was obviously devastated by what happened to her beloved pet.

“This is one of the most extreme examples of physical and psychological suffering inflicted on an animal I’ve seen in 14 years with the RSPCA. This case involved nothing short of torture and is exactly why the Animal Welfare (Sentencing) bill was introduced in 2021 to increase sentencing powers for the most extreme cases of animal cruelty.”

The RSPCA worked in partnership with the police to bring the charges against Hudson.

Sentencing | two years and three months in jail and a lifetime ban. 10-year restraining order prohibiting him from contacting Summer.

Moynes-Burns pleaded guilty to three animal cruelty charges in a prosecution brought by the RSPCA after concerns were raised about her puppy Teddy.

Teddy was found to have 11 rib fractures and multiple injuries consistent with repeat blunt force trauma.

The animal welfare charity was called to investigate when the young crossbreed was presented to a vet surgery in December 2021 with multiple rib fractures and injuries to his paws and tail.

Teddy had been seen several times by a vet between October and December 2021 for separate alleged accidents including falling from a bed and choking on a stick.

He was brought into the vet on December 31, 2021, with fluid-filled lumps all over his body.

Following an x-ray, he was found to have 11 rib fractures and multiple injuries consistent with repeat blunt force trauma. He also had fractures to his front paws consistent with them being hit with an object, which also impacted the use of his hind legs.

Teddy was found to have 11 rib fractures and multiple injuries consistent with repeat blunt force trauma.
Teddy was found to have 11 rib fractures and multiple injuries consistent with repeat blunt force trauma.

The vet said it was unlikely the injuries would have been caused by accidents and the rib fractures and lumps on his body (haematomas) were a sign of abuse.

Teddy’s injuries were so bad that the vet considered putting him to sleep but decided that, with the correct care, he could recover.

In mitigation, Lewes Crown Court was told Moynes-Burns had a troubled past, including mental health and attachment issues and was deeply embarrassed by her behaviour.

The court heard she did love Teddy and sought help for him.

During her sentencing, the judge said: “My hope is that you get better, but the keeping of animals will no longer be a part of your life. You can apply in 20 years but the chances of it being lifted are zero.”

In a statement, the vet said: “Teddy is now recovering well in RSPCA care. He is growing well, using his front feet normally and his hind legs are healing well. In spite of everything he has gone through he is a happy, friendly and trusting dog which is a pleasure to see”.

Colne, Lancashire: Jamil Khan

CONVICTED (2023) | Jamil James Khan, born 1 September 1993, of 9 Mason Street, Colne BB8 9BU – subjected two kittens to multiple attacks, causing one to suffer fatal injuries.

Khan, who has links to Norwich and Bacup, Lancashire, admitted causing unnecessary suffering to the kittens called Obi and Amidala, between April 1 and July 4, 2022.

The court heard how Khan took Obi to Stanley House vets where he claimed the kitten had been injured by a dog.

An examination revealed Obi had suffered fractures to his jaw and skull.

Two days later, on July 3, Khan phoned the vets again and said Obi was shallow breathing but still alive. He attended the vets within a few minutes by which time Obi had died, This time he said the kitten had been involved in a road traffic accident

The vet challenged Khan since the kitten’s injuries were not consistent with this account. Khan replied three times “I just can’t tell you’”.

The matter was referred to the police, who arrested and interviewed Khan that same day. He refused to answer any questions and responded with “no comment”.

A search of Khan’s property found another kitten, Amidala, who was handed over to the RSPCA.

She was taken to Greater Manchester Animal Hospital where it was found she had at least one fractured rib.

A post-mortem examination on Obi at the University of Liverpool found multiple fractures across his body and blood in his stomach, which shows he was alive when being subjected to the physical violence.

Joanne Daniels, prosecuting on behalf of the RSPCA, said both animals had been subjected to blunt force trauma on multiple occasions, while Obi suffered from high energy blunt force trauma and was alive at the time.

Mitigating, Rhianydd Clement said Khan had spoken about being stressed at the time of the abuse. She said that he panicked when speaking to the vet and realised the gravity of the situation he was in, which is why he did not tell the truth.

She added Khan had taken full responsibility for his offending and he is extremely remorseful.

Khan had been studying a psychology degree at Burnley College but has abandoned his course after one year due to the prosecution case.

Sentencing, Recorder David Temkin said: “Over the course of three months you mistreated both of those cats.

“The vet pressed you on how Obi died and the police were called. You were arrested on July 3 and interviewed but provided no comment and the police searched your house.

“They found a second kitten and it was medically examined and found to have at least one rib fracture.

“Those kittens were subjected to blunt force trauma and on both occasions suffered pain from your abuse. You failed to meet their needs.

“Your behaviour was clearly violent and must have been regular. You continued until one lost its life.”

Sentencing | 18 weeks in prison suspended for 18 months; 35 rehabilitation activity requirement days; £300 fine to be paid at £30 for week. Disqualified from keeping, owning or caring for animals for 10 years.

Bedford, Bedfordshire: Zohaib Khan and Priya Sidhu

CONVICTED (2023) | Zohaib Khan, born 24 October 1995, and Priya Sidhu, born 2 June 1998, both of 11 Adelaide Square, Bedford MK40 2RN – caused the death of a five-month-old kitten after leaving her to suffer with open wounds and broken bones.

Convicted animal abuser Priya Sidhu from Bedford, Bedfordshire, UK. Image: Facebook

The couple had both pleaded guilty to one animal welfare offence in relation to the kitten called Coco, whose suffering was described by a vet as “significant.”

Khan and Sidhu initially took Coco to see the vet on May 27, 2022, stating that she had fallen from a sofa and injured her leg. Following veterinary examination, the couple were advised the kitten would require specialist surgery but they never returned.

Less than three months later, on August 6, RSPCA inspector Stephen Reeves was called by Khan and Sidhu to collect a seriously injured Coco from their home.

Inspector Reeves said: “I was advised by the two individuals that they were unable to afford veterinary care.”

He added that she had multiple injuries and was unable to stand.
Her injuries included wounds to her lip and ears, broken teeth, fractures on both back legs, a dislocated pelvic bone, a fractured jaw and a possible sternum fracture.

Coco died of her injuries while under sedation for treatment.

Expert witness Dr Sean Taylor found that there were discrepancies between Khan and Sidhu’s accounts with neither of them able to offer ‘any reasonable explanation’ for the repeated and severe injuries sustained by the kitten in their home.

Ultimately it was deemed that Khan had caused the greatest suffering to Coco.

Dr Sean Taylor said in his statement: “In my opinion, Coco has been caused to suffer as a consequence of being subjected to physical abuse. Suffering will have been experienced by this animal via mechanisms of fear, distress and pain for a period of at least four days, probably longer.”

Following the sentencing, inspector Stephen Reeves said: “The death of Coco was entirely unnecessary and the pain inflicted on this little kitten in her short lifetime was immense.

Crosskeys, Caerphilly: Richard Coyle

Animal torturer and sexual deviant Richard Coyle

Persistent animal abuser Richard Coyle, of no fixed abode, was arrested at a house in the village of Crosskeys, Caerphilly, on September 29, 2022, where police officers found a mutilated female hedgehog who was still alive but covered in blood and a “white creamy substance”. The defendant was in bed, naked from the waist down and was wearing prosthetic breasts.

The court heard Coyle was lying in bed with various items including a cucumber, a vacuum pipe, a gas stove, women’s clothing, a shard of mirror, binoculars held together by tape, and two lit candles.

the hedgehog tortured by Caerphilly man Richard Coyle

The hedgehog was found in a wooden box on the bedside table, and had a wound to her stomach through which her intestines were protruding. She was also found to have suffered a cut to the abdomen and three limbs.

The horrifically injured creature was taken to a vet and euthanised.

Coyle was arrested and interviewed but made no comment. He later pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal, cruelty to a wild mammal, and breaching a disqualification order.

In November 2020 Coyle was sentenced to 26 weeks’ imprisonment having tortured another hedgehog. His conviction came after police found a mutilated hedgehog covered in candle wax, with three limbs cut off and a visible broken bone.

The defendant was arrested and told police “It’s only a f* hedgehog, it has fleas” and claimed someone had thrown it into his tent in that condition. It was ascertained the person screaming “Help me” in a high pitched voice was Coyle, as he tortured the animal.

Coyle also has a conviction for manslaughter.

In mitigation, William Bebb said his client recognised the “severity” of the situation and acknowledge he would be receiving an immediate custodial sentence. He said the defendant served in the military and was previous Welsh champion boxer but he was diagnosed with PTSD due to his experiences of war and had fallen into drug and alcohol dependency.

Sentencing, Judge Rhys Rowlands said: “This was a deliberate and sadistic infliction of pain on a defenceless animal subjected to appalling cruelty at your hands…. This was just about a cruel a case as one could imagine and a mirror image of your previous offence.”

Sentencing | 18 months’ imprisonment. A 20-year ban on owning or keeping an animal.
