North Shields, Tyne and Wear: Paul Smith

CONVICTED (2023) | Paul Smith, born c. 1955, of Percy Court, North Shields NE29 6JG – left his two Bichon Frise dogs with severely rotting teeth and fur matted with faeces and failed to treat a Chinese water dragon’s ailments.

Smith pleaded guilty to three animal welfare offences in relation to dogs Bobby and Molly and a reptile named Charlie kept at his home in Percy Court. The RSPCA rescued all three pets in January 2023.

Bobby, aged 7, had to have 14 of his teeth removed such was the extent of his dental disease. Eleven-year-old Molly’s coat was so badly matted that every movement tugged on her skin and she was unable to see out of her left eye.

Smith also neglected a Chinese water dragon called Charlie, who had an injury to the tip of his tail.

The court heard how RSPCA animal rescue officer Heather Wade had visited Smith’s home on January 15, 2023, to investigate a report of concern for his pets.

“There was an extremely unpleasant smell throughout the property and no flooring on either the hallway or living area floor,” she said.

“The house appeared run down, messy and very dirty with brown grime over most surfaces. In the living area, there were two dogs which Mr Smith informed me were Molly and Bobby.

“Both dogs looked as though they should have been white in colour, but had patches of brown matted fur all over their face and bodies. I was approached by Molly and could see the claws on one of her front feet were very overgrown.

“Bobby seemed extremely uncomfortable and was constantly rubbing his face on various surfaces throughout the visit.”

A vivarium housing a ten-year-old male Chinese water dragon called Charlie was also in the living area. The officer immediately noticed an abnormality with the reptile’s upper jaw/nose area and saw that part of his tail was missing. She was told by Smith that the reptile was unable to see the glass and kept hitting it.

When asked when the dogs had last been seen by a groomer or vet Smith said he could not remember and was suffering from functional memory loss.

Bobby went on to make a good recovery in the RSPCA’s care, but sadly the decision was made to put Charlie and Molly to sleep to prevent further suffering.

Molly had Cushing’s disease and had stopped eating, with tests showing a deterioration in her renal function, while Charlie also had severe mouth rot to his nose and upper and lower jaw on both sides.

Speaking after the case, RSPCA inspector Helen Bestwick who led the charity’s investigation said: “All three animals were clearly in a terrible and unacceptable state and this would have been obvious to their owner for months, yet veterinary help had not been sought.

“It’s imperative that people reach out and ask for support at an early stage, rather than letting animals suffer unnecessary neglect in circumstances like this.”

Sentencing | suspended eight-week prison sentence in court. Banned from keeping dogs and reptiles for two years (expires April 2025).

Swinderby, Lincolnshire: Olly Adegboyega

CONVICTED (2023) | Olly Adegboyega, born December 1967, previously of Morton Road, Swinderby, Lincoln LN6 but as of November 2023 believed to be in Shoby, Melton Mowbray* – for the mistreatment of seven dogs kept at his home.

Despicable: serial animal abuser Oludotun Adegboyega

Olly Adegboyega, who also uses the first name Oludotun, pleaded guilty to causing unnecessary suffering to six dogs by failing to provide adequate nutrition. He also failed to meet the welfare needs of seven dogs.

The RSPCA attended the defendant’s home in December 2022 and discovered the mistreated dogs.

RSPCA inspector Daniel Bradshaw described the scene that confronted him: “The hallway carpet was soaked in urine and there were faeces trodden all over upstairs and downstairs, the smell of ammonia was very overpowering and stung my eyes.”

Many of the dogs were underweight with their ribs, hips and spines visible through their fur. Their sleeping areas were covered in faeces.

A deceased dog was found slumped up against the fencing of the dog run. Her only bedding was an old piece of damp soiled carpet.

When inspector Bradshaw moved her body it was apparent that something had eaten away part of her muzzle.

The six surviving dogs were examined by a vet and given treatment.

One of the dogs was extremely thin, had painful arthritis and numerous age-related health concerns The sad decision was made by a vet to put him to sleep to prevent him suffering further.

An expert vet who examined the dogs said in their evidence: “It is my opinion that these dogs were thin or emaciated due to malnutrition / starvation (simply lack of enough appropriate food).”

They added: “The emaciation and very thin body condition of all of the dogs was obvious despite their thick coats.

“The dogs were all suffering because of malnutrition / near starvation, and most had developed anaemia and detriment to their health.

“Had this situation continued their condition would have worsened further, eventually resulting in organ failure and death.”

They concluded that from the examination and blood results of these dogs, they suspect they have all suffered from malnutrition for at least six to twelve weeks and possibly longer.

The dogs had all been signed over into RSPCA care. They have since been rehomed by the RSPCA Lincolnshire Mid and Lincoln Branch.

In mitigation the defendant, who was unrepresented, said he had owned dogs for 15 years and that they had been a central part of his life. The dogs were all well socialised and friendly. He was said to have taken full responsibility and was devastated.

Sentencing | 12 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months; costs of £1,504. Banned from keeping animals for 10 years.

Additional Information

We were first contacted about Olly Adegboyega as long ago as April 2019. The source was a former partner of his and told us he was a serial dog abuser, not to mention a perpetrator of domestic violence.

The source’s involvement with Adegboyega was in 2016 when she said he had six dogs whom he would “lock in cages, no food nor water for days on end when he went away”.

She added that he “was violent to me and hurt me so I had to walk away”.

The source contacted us again following Adegboyega’s prosecution and said:

I used to know this monster years ago . He had one of my dogs sister, a quality well bred GSD that was sadly one of the dogs that either died or was removed from him.

In my time knowing him, the dogs lived in their own urine and faeces – I reported him and also to his landlord when he stayed in West Yorkshire.

The RSPCA went out to his home but took no further action, but at this point they were not starved just living in shit.

I’m sure many women also will come forward to comment on here, as he was a womaniser, with many partners who did not know about each other. He used women financially and was violent

I’m devastated to read about the dogs , but glad they are all away from him. Two of the malamutes , one is named Smartie , originally came from a rescue.

He was an accountant with ASDA Wakefield.

He also lived in Wakefield, Kippax, and sub-let a property in Menai Bridge. He is from London with family in Wimbledon.

A total evil narcissist.

All of the above must of course be treated as allegations, but Adegboyega has the right of reply if he wishes to get in touch.

Update | November 2023

*We’ve received a tip-off that Adegboyega lives in Main Street, Shoby, Melton Mowbray LE14 3PJ.

Kirkby, Merseyside: Steven Johnson

Johnson had denied neglecting 18-month-old bulldog Diego, but was found guilty in his absence at a trial.

RSPCA inspector Lisa Lupson visited the property in Westhead Avenue in June 2022 after being sent photos of the flat which was filthy and littered with rubbish and used food cans.

The floors of every room in Johnson’s flat were caked in dirt, piled with rubbish and swarming with flies

The officer told Johnson his dog would not be able to return to living in such an unhygienic environment as this was a breach of animal welfare laws. Johnson told her he hadn’t been living at the flat and had already started to clean it up. He was given the opportunity to rectify the situation but when Inspector Lupson returned weeks later, she found conditions had deteriorated further.

She said: “Straight away I could see a large amount of flies and noted rubbish at the bottom and all the way up the stairs to the flat. At the top of the stairs I was greeted by more flies and a large pile of filled rubbish bags.

“The floor was caked in dirt and there was nowhere clean to stand. Rubbish and household items also littered the floor. I was hesitant at this point to go further as I already knew the property was in no fit state for a human or an animal to live in.

“When I saw the bathroom I had to try hard not to gag, it was in a disgusting condition. The sink was blocked with dirty water to the top and what appeared to be faeces caked to the toilet. The kitchen was filthy, again containing filled rubbish bags and the floor covered in dirt.

“The bedroom was also in a similar condition with the floor caked in dirt and rubbish strewn on the bed and floor.”

In interview, Johnson agreed that the living conditions for Diego were unsuitable and he was sorry for not meeting his dog’s needs. Despite this acknowledgement, Johnson repeatedly refused to sign the dog over to the RSPCA. A deprivation order was, however, granted by the court allowing the charity to rehome the dog.

Speaking after the sentencing hearing, inspector Lupson described the environment in which Diego was kept as “unsanitary and hazardous and totally unsuitable for humans and animals to be living in.”

She added: “Diego is now enjoying life which is lovely to see. His welfare is much improved and we will be looking to rehome him.”

Sentencing | 12-week prison sentence to be served concurrently with a custodial term received for unrelated offences. Disqualified from keeping all animals for ten years (expires May 2033).
