Thornton Heath, South London: Tony and Tracey Ford

CONVICTED (2014) | backyard breeders Tony John Ford, born 10/07/1978, and wife Tracey Emily Ford, born 12/04/1983, previously of Margate and as of May 2020 of Carew Road, Thornton Heath CR7 7RE – dumped three mange-riddled puppies in the street

Despite abandoning three poorly pups in a Margate street, Tony and Tracey Ford were only banned from keeping animals for five years

The Fords’ neglect of the three husky/Staffy cross puppies and their mother had gone on for so long that all four dogs were virtually bald and covered in scabby sores. The vile pair then dumped the puppies in the street where they were discovered by a member of the public.

Thanet Council dog warden John Coomes collected the puppies and took them to a vet, before tracking down their mother – a two-year-old Staffy called Bonnie – at the Fords’ then address in Arnold Street, Margate.

Neglected puppies riddled with mange and infected eyes
The RSPCA dubbed the case one of “appalling” and prolonged neglect”.

All of the dogs were suffering from very severe mange, which had led to extensive fur loss.

The six month-old puppies, one female and two male, were also suffering from heat exposure from being left on the street, as well as having extremely infected eyes.

RSPCA inspector Ed Halligan said: “This was an appalling case of prolonged neglect.

“These poor dogs were in a terrible state – they were virtually bald and covered in scabby sores all over their heads.

“For them to have got this bad they must have been just left without treatment for a long time.

“Thank goodness for John Coomes and the member of the public who found the puppies on the street. Without them these animals would have died there is no doubt.”

The pups had to be hand-nursed through the night after suffering bad sunburn

Mr Coomes said: “It broke my heart to see how poorly these little dogs were. The little ones could barely open their eyes they were so red and infected.”

He said it had been touch and go for a while, with the dogs having to be hand-nursed through the night with wet towels to ease the pain from the sunburn after being abandoned on the street.

He added: “But now the dogs are well and ready for rehoming which is lovely – a real happy ending.”

The four dogs were taken into care and have all made a good recovery.

The Fords both admitted charges of causing unnecessary suffering to the dogs and failing to get the proper veterinary treatment needed.

Sentencing: fined £600 and ordered to pay £1,000 costs. Five-year ban on keeping animals (expired 2019).

RSPCA inspector Caroline Doe said: “I am disgusted to think that Jasper, the dog in the cage, had led a life of misery for more than five years.

“There is no excuse for keeping animals like this. They admitted that neither dog had received any veterinary treatment and both had suffered badly from neglect.”

Both defendants pleaded guilty to failing to meet the needs of the two Jack Russells.

Sentencing: total of 21 weeks in jail, suspended for 12 months; costs of more than £1,071. Disqualified from keeping animals for life.

Rainham, Kent: Shane Spearpoint

CONVICTED (2012) | Shane S Spearpoint, born 25 August 1988, of Lower Rainham Road, Rainham, Gillingham ME8 7TN – left a Staffy to starve to death over several weeks while feeding another dog.

Builder Shane Spearpoint was prosecuted by the RSPCA in relation to two-year-old Alfie, who was found collapsed at his home.

RSPCA inspector Ray Bailey said: “I have been an inspector for 17 years and I have never seen anything as bad as this. This poor dog was collapsed, barely conscious and completely emaciated – just lying in the corner of the room.”

Inspector Bailey scooped up the skeletal dog and took him straight to a vet. The vet told the inspector that Alfie would have no chance of survival and he was put to sleep to end his suffering.

Inspector Bailey said: “Even experienced veterinary staff were moved to tears when they saw Alfie.”

Alfie weighed just eight kilos – a male Staffordshire bull terrier should weigh around 18 kilos.

A post mortem revealed that Alfie had a lamb bone stuck in his throat, probably as a result of scavenging for food.

In interview Spearpoint, who at the time was living in Corporation Road, Gillingham, said that he had not fed Alfie for weeks as he felt that the dog belonged to his ex girlfriend who had moved out. He had been feeding his other dog though, while leaving Alfie to slowly starve.

Sentencing | jailed for 12 weeks; £1,455 in costs. Banned for life from keeping animals.

In December 2010 Grant Hurlbert, who at the time was living in Strood, Kent, killed a 14-week old kitten named Jar Jar by slamming him onto the floor three times.

The kitten had been given to Hurlbert as a gift by his then girlfriend (who went on to have two children with him).

On the evening in question Hurlbert had turned up at her family home while high on drink and drugs. The court heard that he displayed some strange behaviour and at one point rolled around naked on the floor.

A family member heard loud noises coming from the kitchen and went to investigate. He saw Hurlbert “hold the kitten above his head with both hands and throw it hard on the floor”

Jar Jar was seen twitching on the floor and died later from his injuries.

Hurlbert assaulted his girlfriend’s father, as he tried to throw him out. He was arrested some time later.

Hurlbert, who owns scaffolding company Quick Fix Scaffolding Ltd, told police he could not remember the incident.

During Hurlbert’s court appearance in January 2011, the judge told him that drunkenness was no excuse for what was an act of “wanton cruelty”.

Sentencing: 16 weeks in prison for causing unnecessary suffering to a protected animal and banned from keeping or owning any animal for life. He was also given a total of eight weeks for the two assault charges and a further four weeks for possessing cannabis and causing criminal damage.

Ashford, Kent: Melanie King

CONVICTED (2009) | breeder Melanie Jean King, born 10/08/1954, of Station Farm, Station Road, Appledore, Ashford TN26 2DG – kept dozens of dogs in cramped and squalid conditions

Neglected puppy on Melanie King's farm

Melanie King, formerly of Whents Farm in Teynham, near Sittingbourne, was given a suspended prison sentence, ordered to undertake unpaid work and to pay over £1000 in costs to Swale Council after breaching the conditions of her dog-breeding licence.

She was sentenced at Sittingbourne Magistrates’ Court after pleading guilty to 24 offences under Section 1 of the Breeding of Dogs Act 1973.

The court was shown a number of images of 40 dogs on her farm kept in cramped and squalid conditions.

Vets inspecting the premises in December 2008 had raised serious concerns about breeding conditions at the establishment.

It was agreed a new licence would be granted to King for a temporary period. This was to allow her time to deal with hygiene issues raised.

But on three further inspections by council officers and the RSPCA between February and March 2009, numerous breaches of the breeding licence were discovered which led to the prosecution.

In sentencing, magistrates told King that had she failed to plead guilty at an early stage, they would have imposed a custodial sentence.

Speaking after sentencing, Swale council’s environmental response manager, Alister Andrews, said: “This conviction is a significant victory not only for us, but also for the animals which were kept at this establishment.”

Sentencing: 140-day suspended prison sentence; 150 hours’ unpaid work; £1,100 costs. Banned for life from breeding dogs, although this was reduced on appeal to just seven years in 2011 (expired).
