Middlesbrough, North Yorkshire: Rebecca Tuffs

Kiara, a Staffordshire bull terrier, was found emaciated and suffering after months of neglect by her owner, Rebecca Tuffs, 35.

The RSPCA first attended her Rainham Close address in December 2023 after reports of an underweight dog. They returned in January 2024, hearing voices inside but receiving no answer. A £150 pre‑paid vet voucher was posted through the letterbox to ensure Kiara could be seen urgently — but Tuffs ignored it.

Two days later she lied, claiming she had taken Kiara to the vet. She never did. By May 2024, officers finally saw Kiara and again instructed Tuffs to seek treatment. She still refused.

When officers returned on 3 October 2024, Kiara’s condition had deteriorated further. She was severely underweight, constantly scratching, and had thickened, inflamed skin on both ears.

She was seized and taken for veterinary assessment. Kiara weighed 12.8kg, far below the healthy minimum of 16kg+ for her breed.

A vet confirmed she had suffered unnecessary suffering due to failure to provide adequate nutrition and failure to treat a skin condition that had persisted for at least a month.

In court, Tuffs’ barrister described her life as one of “poverty, desperation, and struggling to function generally”, and claimed she “loves her dog”. The judge accepted there was no deliberate abuse but said the suffering was “entirely avoidable” and that Tuffs’ life was in a “chaotic spiral”.

Kiara was rehabilitated at an RSPCA centre in Nottinghamshire and has since been rehomed, now healthy and thriving.

Thriving and rehomed: Kiara enjoying life after escaping months of avoidable suffering.

The RSPCA confirmed Kiara had suffered unnecessarily for months and that veterinary help had been made easily accessible. Officers emphasised that owners have a legal duty to provide proper nutrition and timely veterinary care, and urged anyone struggling to seek help early. Kiara has since made a full recovery in their care.

  1. What exactly does a community order involve?.And, 15 RAR days?
What are rehabilitation days and who pays for it?
RSPCA officers visited in December ’23 and returned October 24. 10 months later! Why such a length of time between visits?

  2. Nasty lying pest of a woman.Stop dragging dependent creatures into your life of chaos. You are an adult human so take responsibility.
