Angela Todd and partner Martin Randall allowed Staffordshire bull terrier Marley to eat away at his own tail and forced him to wear a muzzle which cut into his face

Poor Marley suffered physical and mental pain as a result of his owners’ callous neglect

The pair then failed to get veterinary treatment for a painful festering wound which caused the dog serious physical and mental distress.

Very sadly Marley was euthanised on welfare grounds.

Commenting on the investigation which led to the couple being sentenced, Scottish SPCA Inspector Heather Lawson said: “When I arrived at the property the dog, named Marley, was wearing a muzzle and it was clear he had a severe tail injury and also had injuries on either side of his face, which were later discovered to be from the muzzle.

“On closer inspection I noticed how severe Marley’s tail injury was. There was a foul smell coming from it and the dog was constantly snapping round to scratch it. It was clear that his injury was causing him extreme mental distress as well as constant pain.”

Inspector Lawson added, “No effort was made to take him to the vet. His injuries were entirely preventable had earlier veterinary treatment been sought.

“We welcome the fact that Randall and Todd have been dealt with by the court and the sentence handed down.

“We hope they will give serious consideration about their suitability to care for other animals in the future.”

Sentencing: 200 hours of community service. Banned from keeping animals for five years (expired February 2022).

  1. It is absolutely disgusting, that Dog should have Received Veterinary Care, instead he was left to suffer to the point he had to be Euthanised. So Sad.
