Adele Ankers was banned from keeping animals for life after two of her dogs died and eight other pets were kept in filthy conditions.

Ankers pleaded guilty to Animal Welfare Act offences, concerning German Shepherds Bonny and Lennon, terriers Marley and Marvin and cats Tom and Mini and four kittens.

Officers from RSPCA Cymru attended Ankers’ home where they discovered the bodies of Marley and Marvin and the other animals who were kept in unclean conditions.

The German Shepherds and adult cats were signed over into RSPCA care, while four kittens were later also rescued from the property.

Glen Murphy, prosecuting for the RSPCA, said: “The two German Shepherds were emaciated and very hungry. There was urine and faeces on the kitchen floor and no dog food in the house.

“One of the cats had an exceptionally matted coat, so extreme that a full body shave under sedation would be required to treat it. The other had a litter of kittens.”

The animals were taken to New Broughton Vets where the body condition of both German Shepherds was assessed as ‘one out of nine’, both having no body fat and suffering from malnutrition, with their matted coats covered in faeces.

Mr Murphy said the two dead terriers were both emaciated through lack of food.

One was found to have cardboard and plasticine inside its stomach, as it had attempted to eat what it could in order to feed its hunger.

The surviving animals were made available for rehoming.

Ian Barnes, defending, said care worker Ankers had struggled with the death of her partner, aged 41, and had not been looking after herself, her house or the animals.

He said: “She is genuinely remorseful. She neglected herself, her home and her animals.

“Her life fell apart when her partner died. It was a traumatic event last October.”

Chairman of the bench Andy Stubbs said: “The suffering of the animals in this case is quite horrific.

“However, we have heard of the problems in your life and the death of your partner.”

Sentencing: 16-week community order; curfew; a total of £385 in costs and charges. Banned from keeping animals for life but can appeal after 10 years.

Wrexham, North Wales: Lee Andrew Gemmell and Linda Michelle Griffith

CONVICTED (2017) Lee Andrew Gemmell, born c. 1982  and Linda Michelle Griffith (aka Michelle Gemmell), born c. 1986, of Collins Court, Hightown, Wrexham LL13 8QX – confined their dog to a cupboard

Animal abusers: Lee Gemmell and Linda Griffith from Wrexham, North Wales

Gemmell and Griffith neglected to look after seven-year-old dog Penny from October 6 to 20, 2016.

An RSPCA inspector found the Staffordshire Bull Terrier to be malnourished, suffering with an ear infection and sores on her legs, and kept in a cupboard under the stairs.

The pair  each pleaded guilty to two charges of causing unnecessary suffering, and two charges of being responsible for the animal’s welfare.

Glen Murphy, prosecuting for the RSPCA at Wrexham Magistrates Court, said the couple were visited by the charity in October 2016 after concerns were raised by the public about Penny’s welfare.

He said: “Insp Kia Thomas spoke to Mr Gemmell and explained the concerns about the dog.

“Mr Gemmell said she [Penny] had recently been wormed and let her out of a cupboard in the hallway, which was described as being a small area inside, littered with children’s toys, of limited space with no food, bedding or water.

“The inspector was shocked by the condition of the dog, ribs clearly visible, sores on her legs and she drank thirstily.

“To his credit, Mr Gemmell immediately agreed to sign the dog over to the RSPCA.”

Mr Murphy outlined further descriptions of the dog’s condition – that she smelt of urine, had overgrown nails, and was not microchipped.

Penny was described as being of “a friendly nature”.

The court heard Griffith was in hospital at the time as she was pregnant with the couple’s second child.

A veterinary examination of Penny found she had “copious amounts” of live fleas and an untreated ear infection causing her significant discomfort.

Her weight condition was described as being two out of nine (with nine being obese).

After being in RSPCA care for a couple of weeks, Penny’s ear problem had been resolved, she had gained muscle mass and her weight had increased.

Mr Murphy said Gemmell admitted to the RSPCA he should taken her to the vet, but was short of money.

He said she was fed on dry biscuit food and was only put in the cupboard for 10 minutes “to stop her whining”.

Andy Holliday, defending, said the couple were struggling to look after the dog financially.

He said: “Mr Gemmell is the owner of the dog and it does appear that as a result of a difficult second pregnancy and the strain on their finances, money the couple has had has gone to support the children.

“The dog has fallen down the pecking order.”

Mr Holliday explained the reason Gemmell did not give Penny away sooner was because he “had an emotional attachment” to the dog, having had her since a puppy.

Sentencing:
12-month conditional discharges. Costs and charges of £105 each. Banned from keeping animals for 10 years (expires February 2027).

Wrexham, North Wales: Christopher Griffiths

CONVICTED (2016) | Christopher Matthew Griffiths (since deceased*), born 11/08/1981, from Wrexham LL11 5PF – cut off his dog’s ears with pliers

Staffy Victor was found to have cocaine in his system when vets treated his horrific injuries. His bone-idle owner, Christopher Matthew Griffiths, who has never worked a day in his shitty life, was found guilty of causing unnecessary suffering and carrying out a prohibited procedure to his dog following the September 2015 incident.

Griffiths – a man who must thank the Lord every day that steroids were invented despite the obvious side effects he has suffered including a stinky attitude, baldness and cock shrinkage – had denied the charges and said he had been the victim of an assault.

He claimed his alleged attacker cut the dog’s ears off when he was unconscious but the court didn’t buy his nonsense.

RSPCA inspector Kia Thomas said: “When I first saw Victor I was just so shocked as his ears were gaping open wounds. I had never seen anything quite like it before.

“It must have been so painful for him. It was just so heartbreaking. It is awful to imagine what poor Victor went through. It was totally unnecessary.”

Inspector Thomas added: “Since Victor has been in our care he has been doing so well. He is an adorable dog with a lot of love to give. He loves nothing more than to be in your company and loves a cwtch [cuddle] on the sofa.” RSPCA Cymru said:

“We are delighted to say he recovered and is now looking for a home.”

Sentence: 24-week prison sentence; 12-month probation order; disqualified from keeping dogs for 10 years (expires September 2026)
